A good friend of mine, Pete, owns & runs Intersport in Herne Hill. Like so many other local businesses, theyve been forced to close and face an existential threat. They dont have an online store, so they're now providing a local free delivery service to Herne Hill, Dulwich and East Dulwich

They specialise in running shoes/kit, but also have a full range of other sports equipmnet

He's asked me if I could share this.

Hi, would really be interested in getting a new pair of running shoes. What with all this exercise my current pair are on their last legs. What to support local business, I?m a size 10 with slightly wide feet and my last pair were Nike. Could you help?
Hiya, Yes of course! Being a specialist running shop we would usually be able to offer gait analysis and help fit you with a new pair. Unfortunately with the current government guidelines we are unable to do so at present but if you can let me know your current Nike model? We would be very happy to recommend a new and similar pair, if not exactly the same. We stock Brooks, Asics, Nike, and On Running. Cheers, Jack
Hi John. Thanks for the enquiry. We stock a range of fitness equipment including weights, mats, trx suspension trainers, yoga blocks and bricks, resistance bands, swiss balls etc. If its weights you are after we currently have 3kg and 5kg dumbbells, and mats we have 4mm and 10mm. We do stock a range of yoga clothes but given government guidelines unfortunately you wont be able to try them on, however if you get in touch via mobile i can send some pictures of what we have. Many Thanks, Jack
Brilliant thanks. We have the new model of your current shoe (Nike Structure). Another shoe worth looking at would be the Brooks GTS which will be a similar style and fit. I can check what sizes we have in stock tomorrow for you and can either deliver then to you or arrange for you to collect them. Thanks, Jack

Hiya, yes no problem. If you would like to private message your phone number over we can send some images of the leggings we stock that might be suitable for you. And yes we have light, medium, and strong resistance bands to choose from, again we can send pictures of the different types. Thanks, Jack

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
    • Ha! After I posted this, I thought of lots more examples. Screwfix and the hardware store? Mrs Robinson and Jumping Bean? Chemists, plant shops, hairdressers...  the list goes on... it's good to have healthy competition  Ooooh! Two cheese shops
