I have seen quite a few cars deliberately go through red lights lately, and the usual run of cyclists doing the same. I even had one car pull out of a stop line right in front of me, with no excuse for not having seen me. He actually continued moving as I was passing in front of his bonnet! My opinion is that the same people who think lock down rules don't apply to them, are the same people who think rules of the road don't apply to them. It's a attitude problem.

Some one drive and my son and I near Greenwich the other day accelerating over 60mph as we were cycling across towards the cycle Route going to Deptford. They put their foot down and turned towards us. Obviously it was a bit of excitement for them. I've never quite experienced that and I have seen huge amounts of crazy driving. On Wood Vale and the like it is usually cars on the wrong side of the road overtaking buses and the like. I am wholly objective, it has all been a green light to drivers like this.

I almost got up to 130mph on an empty motorway on a Kawasaki 1100 once, top speed was 135 mph but it stated to weave. Note to younger self - that is what proper race tracks are for. Never drove or rode like an asss in urban areas. And in those days you did get caught.

I think it is a mix of opportunity and a deeply inappropriate emotional response to lockdown. If you have a set of fast wheels and are of a certain personality type the temptation to let it all hang out seems to be overwhelming.

There have as long as I can remember been boy/girl racer types and they will flout any rules to get their speed fix. I?m afraid to say the same types can be found on other types of transport, including bicycles. And though not nearly as lethal, they can still be dangerous.

The empty roads had encouraged people to drive like idiots. There was an upside in the early weeks though, apparently the police were given permission to chase cars (normally they are not allowed to for fear of causing a crash) and quite a few baddies got the shock of their lives when they got chased and arrested!

    • Dear families,   My name is Eleanor. I’ve worked in NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services for the past eight years, and I’m about to begin an Infant Observation course in preparation for psychotherapy training. I’m looking for a baby to observe as part of this training.   The observation involves me visiting a baby and their parent for one hour a week over two years, with the aim of deepening my understanding of early emotional and developmental processes. Taking part is a generous contribution to the training of future child psychotherapists — ultimately supporting the mental health of children and families.   Both of my own children were observed as babies, which I found to be a really positive experience. Having an observer gently witness my babies’ development helped me notice their weekly changes in a new way, and I came to appreciate the calm, consistent presence of a trained observer. I was sad when the observations ended!   If you — or someone you know — is expecting a baby due before the end of February*, I would love to hear from you. You can contact me at +44 7977 910018 or [email protected].   Best wishes, Eleanor
    • I rarely iron, so my massive ironing board is just taking up unnecessary space. Does anyone have one of those little ones that you can use on an ordinary table?
    • It's happened twice today, I've never had this happen before! Here's the second one. All I did was try to agree with a post in the lounge!
    • Now I'm having my hand slapped by some forum bot 😮 All I did was try to add a laughing emoji to ianr's post. This is obviously a message from the universe to tell me to get off my phone and get back to working my way through my very lengthy to do list 🤣 ETA: And it's just happened again when I tried to agree with a post in the lounge. OK universe, I give in. Back to the hideous task list.
