the-e-dealer
Surely the HIP use of cool means trendy? There might be fewer attractions there but it is trendier? KidKruger
An asthmatic friend tells me ED is a lot worse for him than Denmark Hill, that's the only solid advantage over ED I've heard so far.Unless you want to go to regular tambourine practice on Sundays. mrure
"Denmark hill has a Wetherspoons, an okay railway pub, a train station, a hospital, and a mental hospital. That is all. Oh, and a big scary tower with a cross."Big scary tower is Salvation Army. Supposedly, one of the best hospitals in the UK - King's College Hospital, Maudsley Hospital - a psychiatric hospital please as opposed to mental, and King's College. Medley
To my knowledge (via some excellent local history books I bought at Chener on L Lane) D K Hill is so called because it used to be covered in, er, dog kennels. They were for Hoorays who would come out from town to what was then the country and hire hounds to attempt to polish off some wildlife. It's also why, I presume, the blocks in the LCC-built East Dulwich Estate are named after hunts - Quorn etc. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/25259-is-denmark-hill-cooler-than-east-dulwich/page/2/#findComment-573309 Share on other sites
Otta
I know the tower is sally army. Ever since I was a kid it made me think of The Omen, hence the scary comment. Jeremy
What's the problem with the word 'mental'? This kind of over-sensitivity drives me up the wall.men?tal1 [men-tl]adjective 1. of or pertaining to the mind: mental powers; mental suffering. 2. of, pertaining to, or affected by a disorder of the mind: a mental patient; mental illness. 3. providing care for persons with disordered minds, emotions, etc.: a mental hospital. 4. performed by or existing in the mind: mental arithmetic; a mental note. 5. pertaining to intellectuals or intellectual activity. Atticus
I think you are being the over-sensitive one here.Mental, in this context is loaded with stigma. The hospital in question deals with all kinds of mental illnesses, yes, but I think we've moved on from the 70s sitcom labels. If you don't get this and are happy to wave 'the PC brigade gone mad banner' you don't get mental illness. Jeremy
I think almost everyone understands the term as a hospital which treats mental illness, not a hospital which treats patients who are "mental". The thought wouldn't have even occurred to me if it wasn't for you! Oh well. Gidget
I agree with Atticus, sp. if mental is pronounced with a dropped T. The sayings "ooh you're mental" and "I'm mental me" also spring to mind.In the olden days (fifty/sixty years ago?) I think mental was not considered disrespectful. Otta
Yes really Atticus. I was just having a little dig at the area, I wasn't really giving too much thought to whether I was using the correct PC terminology. I do enough of that at work. Chillaxed
Surely Otta's motivations are relevant here. He clearly didn't mean to insult so why make an issue of it? Atticus, you use the term 'mental illness' freely but Otta can't use the term 'mental hospital'? What's the difference? QueenMab
Come on, has East Dulwich ever been "cool"? The only place less cool is the Boden farm, Dulwich Village.
