Would you like to take part in the largest physical activity research project ever conducted in the UK?

ESPH is involved in an Exercise, Health & Wellbeing study in conjunction with the FIA Research institute & Greenwich University. The study will analyse the effectiveness of a structured exercise programme in comparison with an unstructured one and separately the effectiveness of physical activity counselling interventions.

ESPH, which is one of 29 facilities involved across the UK, needs to recruit 80 subjects to participate in the study, which will run for 12 months starting on the 15th October 2012. During the study each participant will receive a free health check (including VO2 max and strength tests and blood lipid profile normally only available in elite sports labs) at baseline, 6 and 12 months. The participants must fit within the following clinical category:

? Aged between 35 and 50

? Untrained ? been a member of a fitness facility for less than three months or not attending on a regular basis. Volunteers will be excluded if they have an estimated VO2max of 45ml/min/kg (men) or 35ml/min/kg (women)

? Not currently part of a structured exercise program

? Healthy ? i.e. not be suffering from any chronic conditions (barring obesity)

The participants will be randomly assigned to one of the following groups:

1. Structured Intervention - an individual tailored program of exercise refreshed every 3 months

2. Unstructured - free use of the facility

3. Physical Activity Counselling? no use of the facility however a series of physical activity counselling sessions

4. Control / Comparison group ? no intervention beyond the scheduled health checks

Participation is free. If you fit the inclusion criteria and would like to take part in this ground-breaking study please email [email protected] or call us on 020 8693 2493.
