Do famous people like to be acknowledged or ignored?

I've tried both and feel a bit of a tit in either situation. I sort of assume that they have an overwhelming ego that would be deflated if ignored (that is an unfair generalisation, I know) but everyone deserves to pick up their eggs, milk and athelete's foot cream in peace.
