Furniture (preferably good value of course)

I have spent a frustrating few hours recently searching for reasonably stylish but affordable furniture. Goodness there isn't much. For example, bedroom chairs. Nothing armchair-like to be had for under 500 pounds. Can anyone advise better on where I should be looking? Or have I just lost track of prices and this is the way it is? Thank you

I really like www.made.com stuff or the Linea range at www.houseoffraser.co.uk often has a sale on making it under ?500. Ebay also has some good deals for re-covered armchairs.

Buy something second hand and get it recovered/upholstered. Auction/ebay/gumtree/here.

I know I'm desperate out of touch with what qualifies as "stylish"... but M&S furniture is pretty good quality, and they have a few armchairs between ?300 and ?500.

I'm always shocked at furniture prices, and think most is made pretty badly- which is why I never buy new anymore, and the EDF is the perfect place to get second hand furniture :-)

Gidget's idea sounds like a great way to end up with some unique furniture. But how much does re-upholstery cost? Sounds expensive.

You're Furnished is a pretty good bet if you want to save some money (massive selection at exceptionally good prices, though not sure they'd fall into the 'stylish' category), no online presence though, you have to get your arse up to Stansted, and hiring their van to deliver it all is about 70 quid. We saved about 2 grand over london prices when furnishing our flat so well worth it (low overheads you see, it's a massive warehouse in a field tucked behind an unfashionble airport)

Mrs Robinson get some lovely pieces in every now and then. We got a 'stylish' 60s danish leather swivelly armchair thingy a couple of years ago for ?250, though we recently saw an indentical one in there going for ?350, fuel costs huh?

Another forumite posted a while back about a French online homewares company who recently launched an English language website, and I was pretty impressed by their products and price range. We got our garden furniture from there, and I'm really delighted with it, as the only other stuff I'd been able to find that I liked was of the Gloster (ie eye-wateringly expensive) variety.

If it's in good enough condition then you could just get a loose cover made. Some things sold on here look to be in excellent condition though. I have bought 2 items of furniture from Habitat in the past and they were both terrible. One was a sofa and the springs slipped down inside the back and arms. Thankfully they took it back eventually and I got a refund. Also bought a daybed from them and the seat cushion would not stay on the base. That went back as well.

Also had a bad experience with an M&S armchair. That went back as well.
