East dulwich streets

What's happened to the streets of East Dulwich! Street sweepers used to clean the pavements daily now its an eyesore! Whats going on?

Decisions taken to litter pick supposedly every other day and sweep our street once a month.

Several instance residents have proven neither has been taking place.

Added to this a decision to reduce temp staff reported on the books as contractors. This was turned in a political football - 'wasteful council employing fat cat contractors' type of argument. In Autumn we used to supplement resources using temps to help with leaf falls.

The council administration has decided as its missed its targets on street detritus to further slacken the targets.

Southwark no longer feels one of the cleanest boroughs in London.

JB, I know this isn't in your ward but there is a couple of people in Copleston, who stand outside their house, in their front garden smoking. The man leans on the fence blowing smoke on the pavement. The woman stands further back. They throw the butts out onto the pavement when they are finished, quite often right in front of people who are walking by. Was gobsmacked the first time I saw it. The pavement and gutter is littered with their butts. Have seen it over half a dozen times now. Their house is next to the entrance to Hayes Grove. Can anything be done to stop them doing this? I can understand the smoking outside, but surely you would stub out the cigarette on your own property and then put it in the bin.

I have the same problem, I live next door to an Indian restaurant in Forest Hill Roadnand the staff stand outside and smoke and chuck their butts wrappers etc in to my front garden.

The rubbish is getting worse in Southwark particulary school children eating chicken and chips from boxes and just dropping it on the pavement, lovely the rats!!

Isn't it a criminal offence?

"Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it an offence to throw down, drop or otherwise deposit and then leave, litter in any place in the open air.

Section 27 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 amends the offence to include within the definition of litter the discarded ends of cigarettes, cigars and the discarded remains of other products designed for chewing."

Laws don't change things unles they are enforced and, it appears, Southwark doesn't have th resource to enforce.

Wish they could DNA the butts! So annoying and unnecessary. Quite a few councils like Westminster send patrols out to where people sit having a coffee and a cig. They then pounce when they are dropped on the ground. Think I would find that job very satisfying.

round the west end the bins have v handy ash trays attached.

Yeah I think its a filthy habit and throwing the waste product on the ground equally filthy but a bin or an ashtray - wouldnt that solve the problem?

If I find rubbish outside my house.. drink cartons, bottles, crisp packets I pick it up and put it in my bin. It would help if more people did this.. Although I probably wouldn't pick up old fag butts.
