Hi all,

I was just wondering what people experiences are of the current job market. I am doing a permanent job, that seems secure but I am thinking of going part time to take up a temporary contract to gain more experience. There is no guarantee of work with the temporary contract. What shall I do? Please advise in light of the current job market. Would most people take the risk or stick and park them selves in a job. The job itself its great and wont lead to career progression but its a relatively safe job. Or do I just take up the temping work which could or could not lead to better employment?? Times are really tough and I just cant make that decision. Please share your experiences and advice.

I'd hang on in there until the overall job market improves.

Even if the current job feels stultifying there are ways to improve.

Talk to the HR dept and ask about training courses, volunteer to assist someone else in their project, look around and see if your job, the office, the factory or whatever could "do things better" - then suggest a way to do that. Even if none of these result in better pay - they'll make life more interesting, burnish your CV and help you while away time till it all gets better.

Marmora Man speaks the truth - look at ways to make what you do better along with your cv while staying in a permanent role. You ask for people to share experiences? Not mine but a friend resigned a perm role for a 'better' temp one. Three months later no job, no income, and a mortgage needs paying. Leaving a perm role voluntarily doesn't help when trying to claim benefits should you need to btw.

Like Alan Medic says if you do move go to another permanent role, nothing to stop that.

    • https://www.letslinkuk.net/ I'm interested to know why the OP didn't find this sort of scheme to work, as I would have thought it was much harder to find someone to do a direct exchange with? Does anybody else have experience of a scheme like this? Happy to be persuaded!
    • I personally think is a great idea Bobbly and would love if there was a section for it. I wouldn't offer free gardening under the "for sale" section as I would expect something in exchange and wouldn't expect our cat being looked after for free under the "wanted" section, as an example.

    • I have fond memories of Govinda's I used to go there  back in the 90's (maybe earlier) for an affordable tasty lunch..I was wondering if its still around. Now I have to make a point of going there. Does anyone else remember a really affordable basement cafe run by the church in a street off of Golden Square? parallel to Regent Street? I also used to love the Vegetarian cafe on Neal Street in the basement (Neal Street Cafe?) and there was an inczredible inexpensive authentic Japanese resturant I use to go to with my Japanese friends (who introduced me to it) tucked away behind Long Acre where that brown brick modern building ('modern' I think it went up in the 90's!) now stands that fronts Long Acre and Neal Street..I think it was called Asakasa or something?
