macutd
Why does the council seem to carry on regardless. Charging us for them to carry on as normal . Spending all our money . Charging us for CPZ's etcCan't they rain in their (our)spending a bit and give us some of our money back in these very difficult times? JohnL
Because the government gives money on a spend it or lose it basis.https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/politics/yorkshire-councils-left-sink-or-swim-says-labours-ed-miliband-ps140m-business-grants-are-handed-back-2997739 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/266075-council-spending/#findComment-1458263 Share on other sites
Spartacus
I love the fact that Government and Local authorities reward failure as they expect all the money to be spent and punish those who don't spend it all by reducing what they get next time. This encourages mad spending schemes. If the system was that they rewarded those that saved money by allowing them to bank the savings and use it for bigger projects later on, then instead of spending on speed bumps we might end up with better facilities locally as they can combine savings over a number of years.Completely bonkers backwards system IMHO Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/266075-council-spending/#findComment-1458280 Share on other sites
diable rouge
You can guarantee that if a council were able to put money aside for a rainy day, people would complain why it hadn't been spent on this, that, and t'other. A classic case of damned if they do, dammed if they don't... artful dogger
Are you genuinely suggesting that the council gives money back to the people of East Dulwich? As in, the people who sit in nice ?1 million houses, probably without mortgages due to inheritance etc, and are able to afford to pump out 4 kids and send them to the local private schools? The people who during this crisis have merrily sat in said expensive houses working from home, and having jolly walks around to peruse the delis and bohemian shops of Lordship Lane or maybe a nice stroll to the fabulously wealthy Dulwich Village? Forgive me, perhaps some of the above folk of East Dulwich may have been furloughed of late, which means things may have got a bit tight. Janina's pony lessons may have to be reduced this year, and Sebastian will only get ?100 pocket money for his rugby team's skiing trip, but i reckon they should get by without receiving back taxpayers money.
