Westminster are proposing to reduce the number of spots where street performers can operate down to 15 with only a few allowed PA systems.

This has been pushed through by only 1,800 complaints in a year. Yet millions of Londoners and tourists have been watching and enjoying these performances for years (centuries)

They are asking for responses via a short survey to be completed by this Sunday.

Are you in favour of against reducing the number of pitches, types of performances and potentially driving Street Performers out of the capital?

The survey and more information is here :

Personally I've spent my whole life secretly enjoying seeing the Street Performers around places like Covent Garden and admired their bravery in getting up and entertaining the masses and I for one don't want to see them gone or restricted. Do you ?

We've lost our record shops, dive bars, gig venues, clubs. Carnaby street is essentially a mall. Covid will kill off half the pubs. Anything interesting has been booted out to make space for yet another Starbucks/Pret.

IMO they're usually pretty cringeworthy, but they make the West End seem vaguely alive... and give people a reason to hang around in town, in an era when shopping online is the logical choice.

So if anything... let's have more of them.

    • Hello! We are relocating abroad and so will be withdrawing our two children (ages 4 and 6) from St Dunstan’s College (Catford). If any family is considering enrolling children of a similar age, now would be an excellent opportunity—we’re required to pay full‑term fees unless the places are taken. Please get in touch if you’re interested or know someone who might be. Thank you!
    • Hi  I really thought I'd seen a more recent post on the forum about home education meet ups. I can't find it though. • Thanks for your reply. I’ve subscribed to Ancestry a few times in the past but felt I wasn’t using it enough to warrant keeping up the subscription.
    • Hi, I saw your post and just wanted to say that the incident you’re referring to did happen in the late 1980s at Dawson’s Heights. The person involved was named Carl Salawa, and he had just turned 18 years old at the time. Like you, I haven’t been able to find any news articles or official reports about it, If anyone remembers anything more about that time or incident, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks for sharing what you were told—it means a lot to know others remember.
