As i drive around doing fatherly chores in the evening I often see at the very last minute a person riding on an expensive bone shaker. So expensive that they can't afford to buy lights. Is this a. Death wish and will darwin sort this menace out. Or should cars also have no lights.

Insanity - and dangerous for pedestrians and other cyclists too, you can bet your bottom dollar that the latter would be hurt rather than them if someone collided with them as they didn't show up.

Bit of a thing going at night in my area with hoodied up muggers on light-less bikes - quick get away up back alleys :(

Saw a cyclist the other night with a small red light on top of his helmet. That was the only light about his person or his bike. You could not see it unless you were looking upwards. Idiot. Is there any sort of law about cyclists being well lit? I get worried and fearful driving after it gets dark at this time of year precisely because of odd people like these.

I can't resist re-posting the great Ms Curtain's desires as expressed on another thread

Cyclists - don't just have a light on your head. Think about the level a car driver sits, and the fact that all the other lights are at that height so that's where they expect to see a light.

And when someone gives you advice with the best intentions the correct response isn't a row.

Just to even things up a bit...

I saw a guy on a cycle tonight with 2 flashing lights at the front plus one on his head and 2 either side of his rear wheels and another on the back of his head. Looked like a mobile disco but 10 out of 10 for being seen by other road users.

    • I don't know how it works now but my late parents had little money when they were retired (just state pension and they rented their flat) and they used to take their cat to the Blue Cross (In Victoria if I remember correctly) where treatment was free for those who could'nt afford a private vet. I sincerely hope similar is available still because for many elderly their pet is their main source of comfort and company.
    • In a couple of places locally, I have come across this. I am fairly sure that they attempt to do the bill in their head. If you just say , “no, I think it’s x” they start again and get to an agreeable number, or find a calculator. I don’t think it’s a malicious attempt to swindle people. Just not great arithmetic.
    • There are excellent charities like the Greenwich Wildlife Network who will help if you report any concerns with local wildlife. Foxes are wonderful creatures who had been forced into our town and cities and are just doing their best to survive, we should take care of them when we can.
