Telephone line repair/engineer recommendation

Hi

I've searched the forum but couldn't find anything suitable.

I need to get our internal phone line rewired - it's are in a mess, wires running all over the place, and the line is crackly. It's not the BT line. Any recommendations? Would a normal electrician do this or would I need a specialist?

Many thanks,

Are you sure the crackle is caused by your internal wiring rather than the BT external line? Here's a way of checking. If it is internal, I'd be wondering if it was caused by a simple bad connection at a wire end, so I'd check or remake those first.

If you do conclude that you want a rewiring, make sure that whoever does it wants to use at least a suitable twisted pair cable, such as CW3108 standard, if there's any likelihood that the extension might be used for computer connections. And if that's the case, you might also want to consider using a standard ethernet type cable (eg CAT5), for possibly better line quality, interference rejection, and internal networking capability. Here's something about cable types.

Thanks ianr

Yes it is our internal wiring because the line sounds fine on the master socket but is crackly on the extension. Also our broadband is variable, which I also think is due to the extension wires. So we could just put a new extension line in, but I think it would be a better solution to get someone to come and move the master socket to a more sensible location.

The telephone wiring does this crazy route - in our bedroom window, out again, down the front of the building, into the porch, down again and into the house by the front door, back up again to go over the door, along the hall, and then finishes in the hall skirting board just where it can get easily knocked by shoes and bags etc. So I thought I should get the whole lot tidied up! I don't really fancy attempting it myself.

It will be used for computer connections, so thanks for the info on cables.

Hi jane

I am a retired Telephone Engineer. It is 35 years since I last worked as a Telecoms Fitter.

My exprtise is in Switch Networks...

But in my opinion your Crackle is likely to be the Telephone itself on the Extention.

You could try swapping the phones to check this.

Even more likely :-

Remember, you need to use a 'DSL Filter' on the Extention Phone as same as the Main Phone.

If you don't you will get interference from your Broadband.

Please PM me if you need any more assistance.

    • I am back from holiday and just seeing this. This is Zuzia, and she lives with her owner on Lacon Rd. She found her way home safely. Thank you for your thoughtfulness.
    • That is correct, the collection and delivery operations are separate - the delivery operations work from Delivery Office (DOs) - such as Peckham - whereas collection goes directly to Sorting Offices. What is true however is that there are more daily collections from Post Boxes associated with Main and sub Post Offices - so if you need something to go urgently using one of these will get your post to a sorting Office quicker. [A confusion can arise because the final sort of post into 'walks' is done at the DOs - but post collected from boxes does not go to DOs directly].
    • I also thought the collection vans did not also deliver at the same time, or at least up town they operate very separately. Does anyone else know more?
