... and a real pointer to why the 'You don't need a car in London brigade' are sadly mistaken. Buses (in terms of journey times) are no substitute for rail based transport - tube or train - and yet both these are regularly out of commission at weekends (and public holidays). And of course, while there are night buses, these are fewer/ less frequent and routes less wide-spread than during the day - so any travel which starts or terminates after midnight cannot realistically be 'public' - at best we rely on (expensive) private taxis and mini-cabs if we can't/ won't drive or don't have a car.

I went to John Lewis yesterday

With a buggy and infant

And without a car

It was fine

I would have preferred a train to LB but it didn't stop us doing anything and the alternative routes were fine

Yes there should be trains on weekends and they should be better but "You don't need a car in London brigade' are sadly mistaken." is a bit OTT the other way

It depends on your individual circumstances, and what sort of journey you're doing. Some people get by fine without a car, others might struggle.

I wouldn't claim that the lack of weekend trains forces us into the car, but it certainly doesn't give us a reason to get rid of it.

    • I'm in the middle of the civil service pension crisis with no pension for 4 months and counting. No access to the much publicised loans either. I have emailed Helen Hayes several times. It took her 6 weeks to contact Capita on my behalf but no follow up, no reply, she didn't attend the Westminster Hall debate about the issue either. Lots of other MPs are speaking and acting on behalf of their constituents but I've had no joy. Has anyone else please? What works to get help from Helen Hayes?

    • Honestly, the squirrels are not a problem now.  They only eat what has dropped.  The feeders I have are squirrel proof anyway from pre-cage times.  I have never seen rats in the garden, and even when I didn't have the cage.  I most certainly would have noticed them.  I do have a little family of mice which I have zero problem about.  If they stay outside, that's fine with me.  Plus, local cats keep that population down.  There are rats everywhere in London, there is plenty of food rubbish out in the street to keep them happy.  So, I guess you could fit extra bars to the cage if you wanted to, but then you run the risk of the birds not getting in.  They like to be able to fly in and out easily, which they do.
