Nothing wrong with those locations, in fact I was at a old-time/flatfoot session last night in Homerton (Hackney), but could have done without the public transport journey back.

Compared to 15 years ago I think it's brilliant we have local music events, and is probably one big reason I didn't leave SE22. I prefer to have a local option for live music, in addition to the usual more central listings.

Well, we went into the EDT today to enquire about the possibility of holding some gigs upstairs.

For Friday and Saturday nights, they now want a guaranteed ?1500 bar take. They insist on having a bar upstairs rather than have people go downstairs to get drinks.

So if we had a hundred punters (and the room wouldn't hold many more than that), they would have to spend an average of ?15 each on drinks - that's after they have bought a ticket for the gig.

And if they didn't, we'd have to make up the difference from our own pockets, having already paid the headliner from the ticket money.

So I guess that's why there isn't much live music upstairs at the EDT.

But the good news is, there is a new manager at the Dog (Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village) who is very keen to put on live music in the function room upstairs.

Who are they?

Is it your band by any chance?

Sue, that's bollox, they will lose more money than they will ever make with that policy, total lunacy.

Otta, meant to say previously, couldn't make the Herne Hill gig the other week, but got home very late that night and listened to the links you'd provided - f*cking brilliant. Gutted I missed it, hope it went well.

Cheers KK, it was a good night, except when the power cut out to my effects board during my big solo moment (seriously the timing was so bad you'd think it was planned).

We'll definitely do another night there in a few months. Our next gig is north of the river at Buffalo Bar on Thursday 3rd Jan.

Told the manager it was ridiculous. His response was just "Well I've got a business to run."

Private parties (with disco) produce higher bar revenue than gigs and shows. So I can kind of understand the EDT's thinking. Why risk having to turn down higher spend bookings because of pre-booked lower spend ones, especially if the EDT is not short of business. I don't know what the EDT's profit margins are but when you factor in staffing and cleaning and other things required to enable use of that room, it makes sense to require a certain level of revenue to make it worth their while.

There are similarly other venues that will be only too happy with the extra revenue (whether high or low) that any booked event can bring.

Not sure what could possibly have led you to that conclusion Otta?? Anyway, even if it was my band would you still come??

One of the guitarists actually uses Banjo sound to great affect.. :)

Great news about the Crown & Greyhound Sue, keep us posted.. as far as the EDT management goes - Ravi Shankar's in my view..

Can't be done - too many chin strokers and observers - ticking off their i-spy books of music and groups wot I have seen -nobody will let their guard down and get involved - they're all just pi55ing in the wind - As Will Hey said (or Moore Mariott) Your wasting your time.. why the frick would you try exposing your inner music to these vacuous tw*ts in the 1st place, tried it and failed, waste of frickin space, let them all get back to watching Masterchef on TV

What can't be done, Kingy?

If you promote it, they will come :)

Sorry Kingy but I didn't think your first post was anything to do with folk clubs?

And what do you think a "folk club" is, anyway?

    • My bike (a ELOPS 120 step over classic from Decathlon) was stolen from outside The Belham this afternoon. I locked it up while I collected my kids, then the street was so busy that I left it there while I walked them home. Did a few other things at home, came back about 5.30pm and it was gone. Sharing just in case anyone sees it or finds it anywhere - it’s a few years old and the chain is a bit rusty/makes a clicking sound so maybe there’s a slight chance someone would dump it! Really annoying and just a reminder to be really careful with bikes. The picture shows the bike model from the Decathlon website.
    • Thanks, I didn't know that.  People are even more stupid than I thought then, if they are willing to wait hours in A&E for an ingrown toenail. I presume they don't get put at the front of the queue. Why isn't the 111 service more widely advertised? That puts you in touch with a doctor, who will advise on the phone or visit, and if necessary  you will be advised to go to A&E or they will arrange an ambulance to take you.
    • It hasn't devolved. It's in exactly the same state it was when it started.
    • A&E isn't allowed to turn people away at the triage stage, even people with hiccups and ingrown toenails... the kinds of ailments a GP might be able to advise against seeking emergency care for. https://www.england.nhs.uk/2025/12/aes-under-siege-from-hiccups-and-ingrowing-toenails/
