What is the going rate around here for a good nanny with own car looking after 2 siblings, 2 school/nursery pick ups, driving, cooking, ironing, laundry (housework when kids are not around) but then some of the hours just babysitting (watching tv), and is it acceptable to have 2 different rates? Thank you.

Oh dear, this generally causes a bit of an argument... People disagree! I think about ?8 p/h - ?10 p/h net for nannying (depending on experience and hours) in East Dulwich and a bit less for babysitting (if the children are in bed). It's definitely acceptable to have two different rates but agree it up front with the nanny. They might not want to babysit after a long day at work anyway.


(Just FYI, ?10 net p/h, working 5 days a week and 10 hours a day is an annual cost to the parents (including NI contributions etc.) of ?38,220 - or a gross annual salary to the nanny of ?34,500. So one parent would have to earn ?52,205 gross to pay that.)


But I might be out of date. Try calling a few nanny agencies to see what they say!

Oh yes - agree with LondonMix. Most nannies won't be happy doing general housework, even if the children are at school/nursery. They'll look after all the children's things though (normally washing their clothes, preparing the children's food, keeping their toys/room tidy, changing their bedding etc.). You might be better off avertising for a nanny/housekeeper if that's what you are after?

We have a great nanny, just wondered if she was due a pay rise, especially as she drives her own car now, she only does a day a week, that's why she is ok with a bit of ironing etc, her role has always been partly mothers help. But sounds like we are paying her the going rate, it's been the same for almost 2 years though. I will just stick to one good rate for all hours.

Hello, am resurecting an old thread here as am in the processing of agreeing this myself. I agree that ?10 p/h (net) for sole care and ?12 p/h (net) for nanny shares seems to be the market standard round here but all the advice is to agree a gross wage in the nanny contract. Has anyone converted an agreement in principle on a net salary into a gross wage in a contract? Based on some online tax calculators, it seems to me that a ?10 p/h (net) sole care and ?12 p/h (net) nanny share rate would become approx ?13 and ?16 gross respectively. Does that sound about right to anyone that has done something similar? Any input gratefully received. Thanks very much.

    • You can get a card at the till, though, to get the discount. You don't have to carry it with you (or load it onto your phone), you can just get a different card each time. Not sure what happens if they notice 🤣
    • Yes..that may be the case but membership STARTING at £115 a month is still unafforable for many. Council gyms also have a large range of equipment and I had a  PT at Dulwich leisure centre when I was in Full Time employment who was incredible and even kept in contact during lockdown giving me a program I could do at home and checking in weekly at no charge or personal gain for herself. I dont doubt that Fit For may be a good gym (Its been in situ long enough so must be doing something right) However the cost of membership means it is affordable for the few not the many. If I could afford that kind of fee I would rather get a train to Canary Wharf and go to Virgin active where theres a pool and incredible classes and facilities
