  1. I live off Lordship Lane near the cinema. I'd pick the easier commute which should be PR. If it's the same, then I'd pick what the easier commute to school is for the kids. All that being equal, I'd pick ED as I love being near the high street and use it a lot. It's really horses for courses. Peckham is cooler but I'm too old to be cool now anyhow. ED feels more leafy and family oriented which is where I am in life.
  2. My condolences to you and your family James
  3. I know someone very happy at Judith Kerr but also am not sure they have a year 6 cohort yet as its a relatively new school
  4. A lot of houses around here are used as film locations.
  5. Just heard from the traders on LL that the Laundrette near Pearspring will be a hairdresser and the Indian restaurant that was a Tapas bar will be a Tapas bar again Pearspring is lovely by the way. I bought some lovely plants there today
  6. Indefinite Leave is a separate legal status than permanent residency docs provided to EU citizens. They are two completely different settlement arrangements.
  7. Sorry shaggy but I am pretty sure you have misunderstood. The government means your permanent residency that is derived solely from being an EU citizen will no longer be valid. If you apply for indefinite leave to remain based on the general qualifying terms that apply to all immigrants (EU and non EU) and obtain that, BREXIT won't effect it. Not all EU citizens will qualify for indefinite leave to remain as there is a length of residency test, life in the UK test and an English language test etc but those who do qualify and obtain it will be fine under current rules. I have indefinite leave so I'm not speculating here on what it is. I've personally been through the legal process and it's different to the legal status you linked to above which is permanent residency rules under existing EU rules
  8. I should have said can't (or shouldn't) be revoked "because of Brexit". The bottom line is if you don't want citizenship and you are an EU national then indefinite leave is an alternative
  9. Shaggy I think you've misunderstood the guidance. Right now EU citizens have an automatic permanent leave which won't carry on as it does now post BREXIT. However Indefinite Leave to Remain is a permanent visa (not just for EU nationals but Americans etc as well). Once you have Indefinite Leave to remain it can't be revoked.
  10. You can apply for indefinite leave to remain. Your marriage should be enough to get it but if you've worked and lived in the UK for 5 years continuously then you qualify in your own right as low no as you haven't left the UK excessively in that period. In either case you'll need to take the life in the UK test and provide proof of your Emflish language fluency l. Just google indefinite leave to remain application and all the info will come up. It's fairly straightforward.
  11. Muslins- you can't have enough Nipples cream Cellular blankets A changing table I had a really easy time breast feeding and it was still very hard even though my supply was great and my daughter's latch was perfect. The engorgement pain and the process of my nipples toughening up is a lot harder than I'd prepared myself for mentally. Within a few weeks though it's really quite easy so if you want to breastfeed be prepared
  12. Does anyone have any clue what Swaddesh and the old laundrette will be? I think the Irish shop premises will be used by the cinema as expansion space but no idea about the other two. Also, a librarian at Grove Library said the development across the road that will include flats, a new library and a retail shop has leased the retail space to M&S. Anyone else hear this?
  13. My understanding (which may be off) is the plan for the coal line involves changing the existing streets near this site. The plans as they stand would make the required connections and changes impossible. For major infrastructure projects future changes like this require safe guarding. This isn't an existing boundary issue.
  14. We exchange Christmas cards with our direct neighbours and we have a street Whatsapp group and an annual street party. I think the area is incredibly community minded
  15. I've just asked the planners to ensure that whatever the final plans are for this scheme, that they safeguard access for the Coal Line as has been indicated in the AAP. As long as planners are aware the community wants access safe guarded that's enough. Also, the people behind the Coal Line are genuine community minded volunteers. They aren't posting this message on a lark. If you prioritise housing or don't like the community rail park that's fine but I don't think the people working very hard to bring a terrific project for the entire community are being disingenuous
  16. I'd ask a midwife rather than parents with school age children as these trends change very quickly. We also wanted to avoid a trendy name- my new baby is only 5 months old. I can honestly say of the 30 mums I know who have had babies this year don't know any babies with the same name. Mothers on the other hand- there a so many Sarahs Rachels and Rebeccas you have a clear idea of what was on trend in the 80s. People tend to go for fairly unique / traditionally old fashioned names around here at the moment. I'd echo just go for what you like as there isn't a name in ED as a new mum that I am hearing repeated loads in 2017 so whatever you pick should be a safe bet!
  17. Agree- talk to your neighbours. Given they don't let their kid be loud for long and it's not hugely early, they seem like perfectly reasonable people.
  18. The term is actually furthest distance offer and excludes siblings. If you call the school they'll tell you. When I asked a few years ago it was about 1.6k based on safest distance
  19. Anyone know what the shops between the cinema and the butcher will become? Three units (old burnt out building, laundrette and Irish shop are all vacant / being gutted so I was wondering if a larger retailer was going to take them all? The Picture House was initially trying to get the Irush shop so they could expand but I don't know if they've been successful! Sorry if the news on this is elsewhere. I just had a new baby a few weeks ago so have fallen off the local forum gossip!
  20. I think sexism and patriarchy are damaging to both sexes but I do believe the consequences (at times invisible) for women are greater. The most pervasive forms of gender bias are totally inculcated in the population and perpetuated by both men and women. People talk about funding for women's health issues but the way the medical establishment treat women is full of bias. Women in both the US and the UK are less likely to be taken seriously and given pain medication for the same ailments suffered by men. Even for assessments that should be straightforward -- like blood clot prevention protocols-- systematic gender bias has been revealed. This article in the NY Times really highlights how embedded and pervasive gender bias is in medicine. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/11/opinion/a-fix-for-gender-bias-in-health-care-check.html When it exists (invisibly) in a scientific realm like medicine, how pervasive do you think it is in other aspects of life? Men in the West are privileged in ways most of us can't even appreciate, which isn't to say that they too aren't victims of patriarchy and archetypal gender roles.
  21. The cinema is going to expand into the Irish shop space, The building next to William Rose was sold last year. Its fire damaged but I believe the main plan is to turn the upper portion into flats. No idea if the developer has already found a lease for the ground floor shop unit. I think there is a planning application out for the laundrette. I can't remember the exact street address but if you know it, you can look it up on Southark's planning portal.
