If you have any Philip of Nunhead memories or photos please share them here.

A Plaque of Dedication hopefully will soon be fixed to what will always be known as Philip's Bench.

In Loving Memory of Nunhead Green Legend Philip.

You always had a good generous heart.

You always made us smile and laugh.

Taken from us too soon.

May you finally be at Peace

with an everlasting supply

of Jamaica Rum.

My shared memory:

Philip from Jamaica was a lovely guy but had a troubled life, never see him eat, had not seen some of his grown up kids for years.

Way back Philip worked for the BBC.

The bench seen here was always his spot.

Many looked out for him, last year was in and out of hospital many times, and his health declined.

I always made time to sit and chat with this lovely guy when I passed by, quite often he would give me some cigars, remember once he had a box of Cubans and still shared some with me.

Never a shrinking violet or afraid of speaking his mind, I witnessed some 'lively' exchanges.

Philip was a big fan of 'Elvis From Nunhead' and recall him dancing as only Philip could dance to the King.

Had seen Philip on the Green for years, however I only really got to know this guy after the start of my slow journey to recovery which started in June 2020.

I prayed with Philip around Christmas 2020 he was very low feeling dejected and shared dark thoughts 'Philip you are my friend we don't want you to leave this earth any time soon.'

An intensely private guy, and would never have visitors which included the Salvation Army who would ply Philip with hot drinks and food, which more often was left un-touched or given away.

At his passing Philip was all alone at home.

    • Thanks CPR Dave for the link to Southwark's leaf cleaning schedule. Good to see that.   I think that what may have happened was the leaves weren't cleared during the scheduled week for Whateley Road, which was w/c 17 November.  Then they were cleared a couple of weeks ago instead. We have been here through all of autumn,  and there has been a steady build-up of leaves on this stretch since October.  At one point there was a deep layer to wade through. The photos I posted were from 17 December, and as you can see,  the leaves had been trampled and compressed into the ground. It looked a lot worse at times.   Lots of school kids from the primary school walk up and down this pavement.   In case this happens next year,  I have found a contact page about streets https://www.southwark.gov.uk/parking-streets-and-transport/contact-us-about-transport-and-roads - so I could ask them what their plans are.
    • Amrutha is excellent, unless you are died in the wool meat and two veg most will find the food to their taste and it certainly isn't a place that expects you to be a sandal wearing vegan. Recommend Matoon too, there are many great places in SE23, SE4 and SE26 if you get chance to get on a bus. Don't have takeaways very often and would only do this when they employ their own delivery people due to all the issues with the slave labour that is Deliveroo and the like (and numerous other issues).  Yes it is a different thread but I can't stop myself reminding people.
    • Hopefully we were just unlucky and it was a one off glitch.
    • Just reviving this thread rather than starting a new one, as there must be an obvious answer to my question that I haven't spotted so this might be resolved quickly! I've been using Tessa Jowell recently and If the cameras in the car park pick up your number plate when you arrive and leave why do you have to put your registration in anyway - surely they have all the info they need on film to contact you if you overstay?
