Can anyone recommend a building contractor?

I live in a ground floor flat and an upstairs neighbour had a burst pipe on boxing day. We have been advised by our building insurer to get a couple of quotes for the work from a 'building contractor' (I think this would include perhaps some replastering, repapering, general redecorating, and some other jobs in communal areas). Can anyone recommend someone suitable? (I don't know where to start!).

Hi,


Just wanted to thank everyone very much for their replies and PMs. It makes a massive difference getting personal recommendations. I have had had two builders to visit and am just waiting for quotes, so am hopefully sorted now. I will be sure to recommend them on here if all goes well.

      Steve used to joke that my old VW Golf kept them in business. I've got a more reliable car now so maybe that's why they are closing. Sad day.

      Is Dell Autos closing down completely or just moving? For whatever it's worth, for MOTs I've had good recent experience with The Test Centre in Deptford. They only do MOTs so they don't have any particular incentive to fail you and they usually have same day appointments. Open 7 days a week and late. https://www.thetestcentre.co.uk/our-test-centres/deptford-branch/ Obviously you would still need a "normal" garage to do servicing and repairs etc.

      No. What happened? I actually thought, considering it was what we used to call Guy Fawkes Day last night, the loud noises from  fireworks ended remarkably early. About 9pm? Maybe I just fell asleep and didn't hear any later ones. Do people actually burn Guys any more? Apart from at places like Lewes, where I believe they still have Bonfire Societies and burn effigies of various political figures etc.
