Spartacus
Given the current global Covid situation, with places like India experiencing a variant of concern and even Japan being forced into a further measured approach, should the Olympics be postponed again? My personal thoughts is another years delay is highly sensible. malumbu
Japan has twice our population and less than a tenth of our deaths. They are obviously doing something right. We are opening up for live events. I really don't understand why we are questioning the Games going ahead, obviously with good hygiene, quarantine where necessary etc.India and the IPL is a (Modi) basket case. Let's assume that Japan isn't led by a similar leader to him, Trump or Bolsonaro. Sephiroth
Allowing the Olympic to proceed would be madness. The whole point of it is a coming together of all nations, with fans and athletes travelling from everywhere in the world to a concentrated locationComplete opposite of what we should be doingPlus I note that Tokyo is close to calling an emergency after and uptick Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/284124-tokyo-olympics/#findComment-1510283 Share on other sites

diable rouge
Football has felt souless without fans and it would be the same for the Olympics. Seph is right that the Olympic spirit is all about nations coming together, much better to wait another year until we're on top of the virus globally, so we can celebrate that coming together properly... TheCat
WIth the exception of team sports/tennis etc...the major sports can all be done via zoom....100m is 100m no matter what country you're in..Even the opening ceremony could work...each team could march 400m in their home country...and just switch on a virtual background of mt fuji or similar... TheCat
apols. Perhaps a I was a shade too subtle on my spoof post above...Although a collection of mobile phones flash-lights could easily replace the Olympic torch, no? :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/284124-tokyo-olympics/#findComment-1510364 Share on other sites

And whilst I have now moved to the libertarian right in terms of opening up the UK, when we get the surge, including those watching England at Wembley and large communal events on Sunday, I'm sure I'll be eating humble pie again.Apols, this is not an amusing business. TheCat
So the opening ceremony is about to begin any minute.....I must say it does feel like a ludicrously out of place/tone-deaf spectacle to carry on with at this juncture in global current affairs..... Sephiroth
some friends are able to put all that to one side and are ridiculously excited about the whole thingbut I think you put it very well CatDo we think it will make it through to completion? fishbiscuits
I think it should probably proceed, because the damage will have already largely been done, with the travelling/mixing. But I guess it depends what happens next.. how the infections among the athletes (and within Tokyo overall) play out over the next few days/weeks. malumbu
Once you have done your sport then it turns into a sex party - been happening for a number of Olympics. You are full of joy and endorphins and can eat junk food again so what is next. Olympic Village is bit like a university Campus with students partying after their exams whilst some are still revising for theirs. I was there once (the latter) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/284124-tokyo-olympics/#findComment-1525952 Share on other sites
Sephiroth
The opening ceremony doesn't seem to have impressed global audience - but they did play musical themes from Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest amongst other games - so I was pleased to see that at least Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/284124-tokyo-olympics/#findComment-1525953 Share on other sites
