Make sure our high streets are accessible

Pavement furniture - such as tables and chairs - can block pavements and be hazardous for people with sight loss.

Cafe, restaurant and pub owners will soon be applying for pavement licenses to increase the number of people they can serve outside, therefore increasing the amount of pavement furniture near their premises.

The period that these rapid licenses can be awarded has been extended, and we are concerned that without reasonable consultation from local people on the impact that pavement furniture has on them, there will be a big increase in street clutter on already-crowded pavements.

My father is an ED local, elderly & visually impaired so I?ve seen, first hand, how street furniture and clutter impacts those with disabilities on even the simplest of walks/errands...

Whilst I fully support the hospitality business after such a difficult year, raising some awareness of the impact on those with disabilities is also important, hopefully there can be some work done together to reduce the impact.

Also, this seems a good place to mention that for the visually impaired, social distancing/2m rule can be hard to judge, so please be patient & understanding especially as it?s not always obvious that some people have any disability.

    • I completely agree with you, Angelina. But it's worth noting that no one else has a problem with her, or finds her rude /  has mentioned her aggressively banging gates / ringing doorbells etc.
    • But I don't think that was what you meant, was it? But he can hardly be held responsible for what somebody else did! Just discovered I forgot to post the above  last night, and now it's overtaken by long posts.  I don't have sufficient knowledge  to counter some of what has been said above, some of which appears to be opinion rather than facts, so it would be pointless for me to say anything else.
    • I am sure our lovely Evri delivery team, who do a firkin hard job, take the time between drops to read the East Dulwich Forum 🤫
    • For every person like OP that moans their doorbell was rung and there was a knock on the door, there's someone else moaning that they didn't hear the delivery drivers. If you've ever done delivery work you'll know that loads of people's bells don't work. The delivery drivers probably goes to a hundred doors a day: press bell, knock door, drop package, move on. If you don't like delivery drivers, insist on delivery by Royal Mail where the workers have wages and a union - or just stop ordering shit online that's artificially cheap. But most of us (me included) don't want that
