Quite a few months ago one of my neighbours decided to install what I presume is a pigeon deterring device. It omits a high-pitched noise similar to a burglar alarm for about 5 seconds every 2 minutes. It was a minor irritant, but now the weather is warmer and we have the windows open it is extremely annoying. I'm also reluctant to make use of the garden because of this noise. At least it is switched off at night so it does not disturb our sleep.

I would speak to the person who is causing this, but I have no idea who it is as the noise echos off all the houses in the area so it is difficult to locate. If anyone has any suggestions about how to deal with it they would be gratefully received!

Many thanks,

Dan

Most birdcscarers are ultrasonic and if the batteries get low on power then the frequency drops and the sound becomes audible to humans. If this is the case buy him/her some new batteries.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately this has been the same for many months, so perhaps the noise is coming from a faulty burglar alarm? Odd that it only seems to be on during the day, but perhaps that makes sense as an alarm may not be active at night when the occupants are at home.

One other problem is that ultrasonic devices often have different output levels - some of which might be inaudible to older ears. Seem to recall an experiment where those in their 20s could hear noises that the 40s couldn't hear but they could still hear things that the 60+ couldn't.

It might be a mouse scarer which can have different frequencies - a high powered one for when they are out and a lesser one while they are in.

I think your only option is to try to identify - either by giving an idea of the road here in the hope they read it - or potentially dropping notes around to your various neighbours. There are some apps that try to help you identify where sounds ar coming from - SpectrumView etc - by helping you visualise where it's louder - that might help with a general direction? Good luck.

    • Majority of reported hate crime is based on ethnicity, brown, black and mixed heritage. Religious hate crime is lower and most affects Muslims, Jews to a slightly lowers number and a small percentage of Hindus and Sikhs.   Real or perceived atrocities committed by Muslim extremists and the state of Israel will influence numbers  Anyone who has been to a protest against the war in Gaza will see mainly peaceful and good natured crowds including Jews against war. @CPR Dave stop making a fool of yourself. Corbyn cannot admit to being wrong.  He sprouted nonsense that Russia was not responsible for the Salisbury poisoning, would not be contrite about the accusations of anti-Semitism, and is partly to blame for Brexit. He may be principled and a decent person but is not a Messiah and ran a poor campaign in the 2019 general election, a gift for Johnson. I expect he would have been pants in dealing with COVID, and Johnson set a low bar. I'm with Miss Jean Brody on the Spanish Civil War.  It maybe not!
    • How does your mind work? This is a thread about a bakery that may be opening. Your grasp of history is extremely weak. Mosley’s fascists were opposed and defeated all over the east end, not with petitions either. The principal leadership in driving them back came from the Communist Party but it was a united, cross community movement. The Daily Mail provided constant support for the British Union of Fascists and, along with sections of the Conservative Party, echoed their racist rhetoric. Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose. Excuse my French. To characterise pro-Palestinian demonstrations attended by thousands of Jews among the hundreds of thousands of people from across British society as “protesting Jews’ rights to exist” or comparing them to Mosley’s blackshirts is frankly sickening. You should be utterly embarrassed and ashamed of yourself.
    • I really hope so too, but they aren't going to get much passing trade, and parking round there isn't easy. Fingers crossed.
    • What's your answer, then? Should the council raise council tax to employ double or treble or more the number of workers to spend all their time clearing leaves from every street every day? Leaves have been cleared from my street several times since leaf fall began, including as I say very recently. It's impossible to keep every street permanently clear, and the situation is made worse by heavy rain. My partner broke his ankle in several places a year or so back when he slipped on wet leaves. He didn't blame the council.
