Hi,

My partner and I are totally clueless with technology and want to get our internet for home and mobile devices set up so it is as safe as possible for our kids and possibly with time limits on devices. Does anyone know someone local who can help us with this? I'm sure it's relatively straightforward, but really, we are rubbish! Could do with someone who can walk us through it all - any recommendations would be great.

Thanks,

Kirsty

It's not super straightforward but can be done without paying someone.

Firstly, put a block on any unsuitable content coming in via your internet service provider. You can phone them and they will do this for you if you're unsure how to. You can also do this with your mobile provider.

That will get you 90% there, but won't give you the time limits. This can be done though fairly easily - Microsoft and Google both have family supervision tools. We use Google for our kids' Android devices and the MS one for a Windows PC. Both can restrict use by total time and times of the day, plus ban certain websites or even have it set so they can only access websites you have approved.

I'm certain Apple have something similar, but I haven't used their version personally.

The Apple version is called screen time.

First you need to set up a family group (of Apple IDs)

Then you can simply control everything under Screen Time;

You can control which apps they can use, and when, and for how long.

It's very easy to follow the instructions - they have pictures of which things to tap etc. And if you get stuck you Apple will help on chat or on the phone https://getsupport.apple.com/

It seems to me that it makes sense to have one type of Internet connection for your own purposes. There are many adult online resources, for example maturetenders. If an adult is actively using any sites, chats or even shops, then he can leave the tab with the password open. I always use my smartphone for such searches and for communication.

    • If someone comes to my house and bangs my door and slams my gate, I'd speak to them about it nicely and ask if they would please not do that. And then subsequently less nicely if they keep doing it, ending in reporting them.  We don't slam doors at home and I don't put up with that either. I can see us moving to a culture where we bribe drivers to be nice by tipping them, but we shouldn't have to. It's not necessary - does not matter if they are on minimum wage or not, or if society means that delivery services are outsourced or whatever reason anyone would like to concoct.

    • I never said I thought it was targeted or deliberate. There also has never been a “stand off” or confrontation, we’ve spoken to them in a friendly manner about it. Our experience is they don’t seem to care. That’s the frustrating thing for us, if someone politely raises a concern at least take a second to reflect. Treat others how you would want to be treated.  I don’t want them to lose their job, far from it. But considering it could cost me a days work to fix any damage, I’m within my right to try prevent it.
