AOL was having problems on and off all day yesterday.

At one point they had a notice in red on their online help page to that effect (not much help if you couldn't get online to see it!)

There was also a recorded message on their phone helpline basically saying "Don't bother waiting twenty five minutes to speak to one of our advisers, they won't be able to help you connect."

I hadn't realised it was just in this area though :(

Must say, I've always been reasonably happy with AOL in the past, but in the last few months I do seem to have had quite a few problems.

Difficulties with my e-address book have been the worst (addresses which I had deleted have been randomly restored by AOL, for example, which is a pain when they are in a big mailing group which is not easy to check).

AOL originally said this was due to a server problem which they couldn't say when would be fixed (grammar) and they gave me the great sum of ?5 compensation for the hours I had spent trying to make sure the names in each group were actually correct :-S

Now they say I can't edit the group, but have to delete it all and start again. WOT ?!?!?!

Anyone know anything about the best way to set up a mass emailing group if AOL can't handle one?

It is possible to use another ISP but still keep your AOL email address. Sadly I can't do this as I am locked into a contract (seduced by the free laptop offer - only to find firstly that I had to buy more RAM as the 1gb provided is not really enough if you have Windows Vista, and secondly that the phone provider I also had to move to is far from being, as I was assured, "cheaper than BT").

Oh well, the perils of modern technology, eh :)

A - Always

O - Off

L - Line

Thats one of the reasons I gave up on them, that and the lagg, but i have to be honest I really do miss the Pub Quiz chatrooms they used to have, not sure if they still do it and actually forked out about 10-12 for the downloaded package to become a quizmaster which was fun at the time as you could create your own naughty quizzes!

On the AOL chatrooms, (don't know if they still do them) there was one called the pub quiz 'room' or something like that, its been that long since I've been with them. The lagg refers to the delay in how long it would take for things to update or come onto screen if you sent a message or replied to someone's question, particularly bad when trying to get an answer in really quick on a quiz as you were scored on not only the correct answer, but the first ten people to get the correct answers were awarded points and at the end of the round you would have a winner. Was really fun now to think of it, mmmmm might have a peep now if they've managed to sort out all their probs and updated everything.

got to say - find virgin excellent.

only went tits up once for 30mins when it was still NTL - use it 10-12 hrs a day for home business & personal with no problems.

their customer services seem to have improved too and even are polite and in the uk so you dont have to yell your password at them 4 times and then enter polite 'banter' about the lovely weather (as rain lashes against the window).

    • I was talking to my brother in the law last weekend who works for a different water company. He said he and his colleagues watch TW’s woes with a mixed of horror, disbelief and then relief that they work for a different water company. Worth a watch. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00284vt
    • But Thatcher is dead. Nobody since has brought the utilities back under public ownership (if that's the right term). So there are many people who could be blamed. Meanwhile the shareholders get richer and everyone else gets increasing bills and a poorer service. Plus as said above, a massive waste of a limited resource like water. Not to mention the polluted rivers and seas. At least the privatisation of the railways is being reversed. Hopefully water may be on the list somewhere.
    • That's really helpful. Do the Community Councils still exist? It sounds to me that whoever the contact is on the council who has sorted out the North Cross Road notice board and put the new list of councillors in it must at least have access to the key for that one? Unless it was one of the unlocked ones. And of course if somebody knows where the keys are, they may have no idea that people are looking for them or that this forum thread exists. Which are the notice boards which are not locked?  The very helpful locksmith near the station (?Callows?)  might be able to provide keys for them, or if not, new locks, in return for some local publicity? In fact, they may be able to advise in general, rather than keep trying unresponsive people at the council. But then of course there is still the question of who is going to take responsibility for putting appropriate East Dulwich community information into them and updating it as necessary.
    • Our residents' association used to have keys many moons ago, but when locks were changed, we tried everyone (including ward councillors) to get keys to no avail. A couple of boards are not locked. The Community Councils originally paid for all the notice boards in Dulwich. May have come under the Cleaner Greener budget.
