megelizabeth
We got a bit of a surprise yesterday afternoon when our pup got hold of a pigeon in the garden. The poor thing must have already been injured or ill ? our little dog usually isn't much of a threatening predator (and she hardly got to the bird before I grabbed her.) We'd hoped the bird might make his way off, but 24 hours-ish later he's still just hanging in the corner of our garden looking scared and sickly. Does anyone know who we can call? I've found info on the Southwark site for dead animal removal, but I have no clue what I can do with a sick pigeon that I'm not too keen on handling myself. Guest
Perhaps try ringing the vet? They might be able to help or at least give advice on what to do?Neighbourhood Vet is very good. Penguin68
Could be a fledgling fallen out of the nest - we've had a couple. A fox or cat will sort your problems. Please don't follow this advice. Talk to a wildlife rescuer/expert. Many wild animals- fledgelings being a particular victim of this - are 'put out of their misery' when if assessed they would have been found to have been perfectly viable/ treatable. BillyOcean
Same thing happened to me, and I spoke with the London Wildlife Protection on 07909 795064. They advised me to store the bird in a shoebox, then they would collect. They said DO NOT CALL VETS, as they will destroy the bird. Eventually no one came, so I call again and UBER'd (at my expense) the bird to a pigeon sanctuary on Croydon.Bird was saved. megelizabeth
Thank you everyone for your help! I was in contact with London Wildlife Protection, who sent over a couple of lovely volunteers to pick up the pigeon. We?d checked on him 15 minutes before they arrived? but unfortunately the pigeon was nowhere to be found when they showed up. Hopefully he just needed a bit of rest and was able to fly away. I typically detest pigeons, but it?s sort of wonderful to see so many people care for their well-being. The kind folks at https://www.londonwildlifeprotection.org/ accept donations if anyone is feeling inspired to contribute to the cause. worldwiser
I once took an injured sparrow to Neighbourhood Vets after it flew straight into our french windows. Took it down there in a shoebox, they sorted him out and let him go. Just to quash unpleasant rumours about vets killing animals.. because clearly that's why they took up the profession?!
