OutOfFocus
Let's agree to differ. I prefer English English Edit to say: the openibg post by Malumbu has " Staffer = employee (or longhand 'member of staff'). Nasty American term." KalamityKel
Brainwriting and ideation. Grab Bundle Expand I bloody hate "grab". It used to mean "snatch" (not in its ruder sense) as in snatch and grab, and now it's just used all the time instead of "get" or "collect". eg "I'll come and grab them later" or "can I grab a cup of tea?" Also "Up for grabs" GRRRR Edited September 26, 2024 by Sue 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/292122-annoying-words-that-have-cropped-up-in-our-language/page/14/#findComment-1681086 Share on other sites
Sue
I'm reviving this thread in order to have a moan. Dive. Deep dive. I'm not sure why, but recently these words seem to be in everything I read, especially online, and I am finding them REALLY ANNOYING. Why not just say, I'm finding out more about this, or, now I am going to tell you much more about this? AAAARGH. (It's also annoying that the local swimming pool isn't deep enough to dive, but that's a totally different issue.) fishboy
Oooh, I wasn't aware this thread existed!! My family have been watching lots of Traitors recently, and I'm getting so wound up when the participants all use "yourself" during the banishment section... "I've been suspicious of this person for a while, and it's yourself, Paul" Why not just "you"?!?!? And while we're at it, "myself", often used by footballers in a similar way... "For myself, it was a penalty" 😖😖😖😖😖 1 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/292122-annoying-words-that-have-cropped-up-in-our-language/page/14/#findComment-1705212 Share on other sites

fishboy
One more while I'm here, although more of the way a word is used, and whilst possibly pedantic it really does annoy me!! "Dilemma" Constantly used to describe any tricky decision, but the definition is a decision with only two options, both of which will have an equally bad outcome. So a choice of whether to have cake, ice cream or chocolate is NOT A DILEMMA!!! See also "Decimate", which means to reduce by 10%, not just general widespread destruction... 😖 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/292122-annoying-words-that-have-cropped-up-in-our-language/page/14/#findComment-1705221 Share on other sites
