Nothing really wrong with these two, it's just the way they're misappropriated by a load of t×ts in marketing...

Grab

I bloody hate "grab".

It used to mean "snatch" (not in its ruder sense) as in snatch and grab, and now it's just used all the time instead of "get" or "collect".

eg "I'll come and grab them later" or "can I grab a cup of tea?"

Also "Up for grabs" GRRRR

I'm reviving this thread in order to have a moan.

Dive. Deep dive.

I'm not sure why, but recently these words seem to be in everything I read,  especially online, and I am finding them REALLY ANNOYING.

Why not just say, I'm finding out more about this, or,  now I am going to tell you much more about this?

AAAARGH.

(It's also annoying that the local swimming pool isn't deep enough to dive, but that's a totally different issue.)

do NOT get me started on "grab bags" - as in the large size packet of crips at train stations and the like

or relatedly "grab'n'go" - how about just chilling and eating something nice in a relaxed way

Oooh, I wasn't aware this thread existed!!

My family have been watching lots of Traitors recently, and I'm getting so wound up when the participants all use "yourself" during the banishment section...

"I've been suspicious of this person for a while, and it's yourself, Paul"

Why not just "you"?!?!?

And while we're at it, "myself", often used by footballers in a similar way...

"For myself, it was a penalty"

😖😖😖😖😖

One more while I'm here, although more of the way a word is used, and whilst possibly pedantic it really does annoy me!!

"Dilemma"

Constantly used to describe any tricky decision, but the definition is a decision with only two options, both of which will have an equally bad outcome.

So a choice of whether to have cake, ice cream or chocolate is NOT A DILEMMA!!!

See also "Decimate", which means to reduce by 10%, not just general widespread destruction... 😖

    • As a former Pug owner I get really upset and angry when I see owners of brachycephalic breeds (all bull dog breeds, pugs etc) taking them out in hot sun..Those breeds should be walked very early in the morning and at dusk ideally or if they need a pee just pop out for a moment or two..do NOT drag the dog around panting like a fur accessory. I REALLY want to 'have a word' with the owners but when i once did that a couple of years ago (frenchie pup being dragged along panting in the heat kept trying to lie down in obvious distress) its female owner told me to f-off and mind my own buisness so now I avoid the aggro.
