Sydenham school is one of the most homophobic schools i’ve ever had an encounter with, i sent my daughter here and she is apart of the lgbtqia+ community. I sent her thinking this was a positive environment but it was in fact the opposite. my daughter experienced severe homophobic bullying from students and staff at her time at the school, I had no choice but to pull her out of the school as she was highly depressed from all the bullying.

That is terrible. Did you take it up with the staff concerned? And/or the head teacher?

My youngest was bullied at Sydenham (which i was not aware of until her form teacher rang me). Daughter decided to confront the bullies, and reported them to both form teacher and head of year. With the support of the school, she informed the bully's parents what she had endured and was not bullied again. This was many years ago and daughter is now a 38  year old teacher of pupils from 14 onwards. She looks out for signs of bullying and is ready to step in when necessary.

    • I know people won’t have any sympathy but the SEND challenge was brought up when taxing parents who have opted for independent school to meet a child’s SEND needs. Funding crisis is getting worse and the VAT on Education pushed children out of independent schools, now their SEND needs are to be met by the state.
    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
    • And they started long before midnight!
    • First mate - I wondered if I was imagining things at 4.45 this morning . Apparently not .
