Initially these boards were approved by the old Community Councils as a way of giving local residents information regarding surgeries, hustings, local events. Keys were issued to Ward Councillors and a few local activists.North Cross Road comes under Goose Green Ward. Over the years, the locks on many of the notice boards have been replaced but keys are not always given over to the original 'holders' Some do not have locks so anyone can post leaflets etc.
Years ago I asked for a key to help maintain the noticeboard on North Cross but was told only a couple of people have keys. One was the woman who runs Health Matters but she rarely seemed to keep them updated. A real shame it's now damaged as they can be very useful in showing what's on and local councillor details etc.

I've been thinking about the notice boards for while, so I was really interested to read these posts. They seem like such a potentially great and simple community resource, I'd be sorry to see them go. It's almost inevitable they'll be vandalised if they're not kept up to date, I suppose. I'm going to drop a line to our councillors and see if anything comes of it.

    • Thanks penguin  always wondered about that place and that’s way more info than I ever thought I would get  (used to live above a gun nut on friern road - he would tell me nothing)
    • There was a Saturday afternoon crowd of enthusiasts, and at other times the owner might have been off acquiring stock. He also repaired air guns, which he also sold. He stocked edged weapons, uniforms, including antique uniforms, air guns and ammo and starting pistols and shot. Some medals and other militaria. Quite a lot of ex service chit chat on a Saturday. I had an amateur interest, didn't deal a lot, in English pattern swords and other mainly 19th century militaria. And made some good purchases there. I'm afraid WWII and later events was the major focus of most of the regulars.
    • Did anyone actually venture in to that place? I recall it always being closed/very uninviting!
