Can anyone recommend a SIM for use in Australia? My OH is going there for a couple of weeks and our current mobile provided charges a lot for data, calls etc when abroad. I see there are prepaid data only cards available which I'm guessing would allow calls to be made via WhatsApp. It would be good to get input from anyone who knows what works well though. Thanks in advance.

Does your phone support a virtual SIM?

If so, I use YeSim pay as you go esim for overseas travel. It’s an app/virtual sim that you can use travelling anywhere in the world - tonnes cheaper than paying roaming and data charges in a lot of countries (outside Europe).

It can be a bit fiddly to set up and you need to remember to switch the YeSim line on for data and your usual data provider off when you land but once it’s set up you can use it anywhere.

There are lots of other providers who can do similar, esp for Australia.

Whenever I go I take 2 iphones. My current iPhone with my uk sim I keep on but switch of data roaming. When I arrive I buy a Telstra prepaid SIM card with $30 credit and put that in my old spare iPhone and use it for all my Aussie calls texts etc and tether my uk iPhone to it so it has data as well. Alternatively use one phone and take your uk sim out and replace it with the Telstra sim. I find the 2 phone set up best for me. Telstra is not the only choice of network you have but I find it has the best network coverage in rural Australia which is what I need. I hope this helps and have a fantastic time

Thanks both the replies. I've checked out the virtual sim (which I'd never heard of before), but it seems my OH's phone doesn't meet the criteria. It's probably too old in other words.

The Telstra option sounds good as she will predominately be staying in a very rural spot in Queensland. Just need to find a 2nd phone here to avoid the messing around.

Thanks again.

All the chains are have seriously hiked their prices over the last few years which now makes pet ownership only possible for the wealthy few. Even with pet insurance -( which often excludes items or has ‘deductibles’ ) it is just so much money. A visit with some medication is often £150 - £200. The vets themselves are excellent.
