Gardening tips for February/March

It’s been a long time , but I’m back to bore you or interest you, get you out in the Spring sunshine & look after your garden. So hang on & smell the Roses

1. Prune your Wisteria . Cut back the whips smaller branches to 3 or 4 buds from the main stems

Sometimes we need to maintain the structure, but prune it , removing sections of older stems or cutting back to a skeleton frame . Train it along walls , pergolas or arches

Give all plants a good potassium feed

2. Prune Hardy evergreen hedges before the birds get nesting. Renovate overgrown deciduous hedges by cutting back & clearing all that rubbish that has built up to let the air circulate

3. Cut back deciduous ornamental grasses & tidy up your evergreen ones with a pair of scissors

4. Roses . Cut back hard your shrub & bush Roses to just above a bud , cutting to an angle. Don’t worry if there are a few shoots , they will grow back very quickly. Prune your climbing Roses & Standard Roses less than the others. Give them a good feed of manure & watch them give you a good display of colour

5. Given the weather, you may want to give your lawn a light trim , airing & feed . A bit early but worth the advice

5. Dig over your borders & get rid of your weeds early in the season

6. Nice time to plant up new plants , trees & shrubs. Dig a hole one third bigger than the roots , feed with manure & plant up

Still awake. Well done

If you don’t want to do these tasks or are too busy then ask your East Dulwich gardeners to do it for you . Use only the recommended ones ok

My Son Oli is working hard away on bigger projects, like patios , decks stairs even . Victorian tiled paths , but I am available for the smaller ones now ; laying turf , making borders , putting up fences , buying plants & planting them cutting hedges or planting new ones

Let me know soon , or I will be running my retreats out in beautiful Kefalonia soon 😊

Whatever you do, have fun in your gardens & enjoy the sunshine & your connection to nature

    • I had this same query the other week - Mediquip no longer cover Southwark and I believe the company when bankrupt? Anyway, after some digging, I found the news on the adult social care page of Southwark Council website.  The new supplier of medical equipment that is issued to Southwark residents via an OT from the council or the NHS is Provide Equipment Hub.  I emailed them about returning two items and they did promptly respond and came and picked up the items the following week.  Email them at [email protected] Importantly, they will come and do urgent repairs of equipment like hospital beds.  I'm surprised that Southwark haven't made this change more widely known as it will impact many vulnerable residents.

    • Hello East Dulwich families 👋 I wanted to introduce myself to the community. I’m a professional family & wedding photographer with 14+ years of experience, and I split my time between the US and London throughout the year. I’ll be based in London for the coming weeks and would love to photograph more local families here in East Dulwich. My approach is very relaxed and natural — no stiff posing, no pressure — just real connection, movement, and the beautiful everyday moments that tell your family’s story. I work especially well with kids and parents who feel “awkward” in front of the camera (which honestly is most of us!). Sessions can take place at home, in the park, on your favourite street, or anywhere that feels meaningful to you. The goal is to create images that feel like your life — not a photoshoot. If anyone has been thinking about documenting this season with their children, I’d love to connect, answer questions, or simply share examples of my work. No pressure at all — just happy to be here and meet some neighbours. You can see my work here: https://bluesparkphotography.com/family/ (use the contact page on the site to send me a message if you're interested!).
