I was very disappointed this morning, expecting the Flying Pickets I got my copy of "Only You" out that just requires David Gittins signature on it to make it a full set of signatures but obviously the NUT couldnt afford them.

Still I did get a photo

Yes, the OP is trying to reinforce picket lines with added numbers from outside the teaching staff. This is simply multiplying the intimidation that picket lines exhibit.

Stopping other teachers going to work through intimidation is a primitive and unacceptable practice.

We live in a free society and there is simply no justification for intimidation for someone who wants to enter their workplace.

Picketing by teachers outside schools is a shameful practice and one would think that the teachers organising this should be condemned unreservedly. Our kids education should be their prime consideration.

If they don't like the teacher's salary then they should get a job elsewhere. There's plenty other jobs going at present.

I can tell you first-first hand as I have a nephew who is a teacher, He has set up his own business, on the side, working out of rented premises where he offers courses and products. He has a very nice little earner there, which is also on-line, because he is innovative and willing to work hard.

By comparison the picket lines , in my view, are populated by those who are only willing to sit back, take the salary and whinge.

So, you would prefer more teachers to leave the profession than the thousands that are leaving already. Perhaps you don't think children need to be eductated by skilled and talented professionals and would rather these highly numerate and literate people with excellent communication and personal skills went and worked elsewhere. I personally value education and the people who teach. I also think that if there weren't picket lines, you 'd probably be berating teachers for having a day off!

Drat Spartacus stole my line. I visited three schools on my way to a job near Grove Park. Well I dinged my bicycle bell and the small band of jolly teachers on the line waved and at one school cheered. The only Flying Picket was in my mind, taking me back to an 80s gig before the lefty a capplla group had brief fame. It was hardly Wapping or Grunwick.

Many will be opposed to this strike or strikes more generally. That is understandable. But Vladi your reactionary views are rather saddening.

I met my MP a few years ago to discuss an staffing dispute. He told me that even Thatch, whatever she may say in public, looked for negotiated settlements. (She also saw the sense in negotiating with 'terror' groups). Her disciples appear to be ideologically opposed to this.

    • My mum (91 years young!) well remembers going to Austin's as a child, which she described as an 'Aladdin's Cave'!  She absolutely loved it - and is still a shopping fiend to this day (I 'blame' Austin's 😉). Going back up Peckham Rye, passing Austin's on your right hand-side, just past Phillips Walk (so not far from Austin's at all), I believe there was a British Relay Wireless shop - this would have been in the late 1930s/early 1940s.  Does anyone know anything about this? My grandad (my mum's dad) used to manage it; it was severely damaged in The Blitz - but I am having trouble locating it.  Mum's memory is dim (she was 6 at the time); she originally thought it was in Rye Lane, but we think now it was in Peckham Rye just up from Phillips Walk (originally Phillips Road).
    • Thanks everyone, this will need to be reported again as the fox was still mobile and walking down the road when last seen... hopefully someone will spot and report.
