Sad news that the Wrestler Mick McManus has died.

Was a local man often seen around East Dulwich.

Was on our screens (Black & White) in the 60's and in the 70's

Great 'Showman'

Remember my mum rushing back with me from Saturday shopping in Rye Lane so we did not miss

him and Jackie Pallo grapling. Screaming at the screen..

Sad news that the Wrestler Mick McManus has died

I was one of his regular supporters, I remember that the local wrestlers would all share the same battered van to go to the more distant venues.

Mick McManus used to go into a house opposite the Emergency doors of the Baths in Crystal Palace Road.

Wrestling Arena.

Dulwich Baths was the venue for the very well attended Bouts.

The Pool was covered with board sections suspended above to water, a Ring put up, rows of single folding seats to all four sides of the Ring. To sit too close or at ringside had it faults the occasional wrestler landed on the spectator breaking the chair.

It was not uncommon to see a ringside aged spectator get up and poke the still fighting wrestler hanging from the ring with her walking stick. There were our local lads the Law Brothers that was Len Britain & The Collage Boy, Mick McManus , Jackie Pallo. The venue was varied sometime we had to go to Camberwell Baths or Manor Place Baths.

He used to tease Jacki Pallo to make him annoyed and respond.

Just imagine the revenue that this would raise if once again used

He was often in my queue down at St Saviour's church hall on polling days and saw him with a small car on Denmark Hill where he lived up until a year or so ago. His hair was always jet black!

I promised myself that the next time I saw him, I'd say hello and ask him how he was keeping these days but sadly I've left it too late.

Happy days on Saturday afternoons too.

    • I would love something like this..I remember the one where Gails is now..It had some bric a brac furniture and 2nd hand clothes, I don't remeber the Oyster bar. The issue with the one on Zenoria St-And I speak as a long time habitué of Portobello, Kensington Market, Alfies,Spitalfields,Covent Garden (back when it had a decent vintage market on Mondays in the 80's and Early 90's) ..Was that a lot of the stuff they sold looked a bit meh..like a bad car boot fair. I also remember when we first moved here a small indoor market on the corner of North X road and Felbrigg rd that had bric a brac and bits of furniture..That one had some good stuff. I think the secret is in having a good mix of stalls selling well curated pieces at decent prices...It would also be good to have a few tables and rails available to rent for one-off sellers (car boot style) by application. When I lived in Notting Hill I used to do Portobello under the flyover a couple of times a year and made really decent money because people tended to go there on sundays for the Casual stallholders rather the same dealers selling the same stuff.
    • Highly recommend landscape gardener Jasper Davis. Jasper designed and built me a bespoke summer house.  He also transformed my garden including natural paving/sleepers and planting. Can't recommend him enough.IMG_9568.HEIC Contact Jasper on 07966 251778
