Sunday, 0810: A woman got out of a white van, came to my house, looked inside/into the front garden but then clocked I was sitting in the front room. She scarpered and got into the vehicle, heading down towards Barry Road. (I live opposite the school.) It looked like the van - transit van-style - was at least ten years old and had signage on the back doors removed.

She was no more than 5'5'', slim, had long, wavy dark hair and a southern European/Mid-East skin tone.

Not saying it was the same thing, but almost every day I see similar looking vans drive slowly around these streets (I live close to you) and I think they're often looking for scrap. When we've put things out that we don't want, vans like this often take them. Did you have something that looked / looks like it might be scrap in your garden? Worth noting though.

There's long been a scam for stolen garden ornaments, statues and posh-looking planters - the likelihood is, though, that they'd go missing at another time of day, not 8.10 a.m.

GET THE VAN LICENCE PLATE NUMBER next time.

Different from the modern day rag-&-bone van which does us all a service taking scrap metal and other recyclable rubbish out of the way. The suddenly booming scrap metal market attracted a few famous thefts and has had to be tightened up so dealers won't accept anything without paperwork now.

Some collected stuff certainly ends up in 2nd hand shops, for charity as well.

Anyone collecting up junk for legit reasons would expect to see it by the dustbins or on the pavement, such people always come to the door & ask about things out in the front yard.

It's a polish women/man. Who go round looking into people's gardens for things which they can make money off. I saw them on my road today when putting out the rubbish. She got out her van and looked into my neighbours skip. This is her third time I've seen her on my road in the past week. If I see her again will write the number plate down.
I admire the idea of making money from something that someone else has been designated 'rubbish' - by putting it in a skip, for example. I don't like the idea of someone poking around in a front garden with the assumption that anything in there was ripe for the taking. I'll keep my eyes peeled and tackle her if I see her again.

Just interested to know how you know they're Polish. The ones that we've seen that fit that description are definitely Romanian, though I guess there could be a Polish couple roaming about too. (On Saturday morning there were 2 English men that I've seen around here for years cruising about picking up scrap). The man and woman seem to think that anything that's outside the front door is up for grabs and we've stopped them from helping themselves before though they did us a favour last week and took a door we had just put out. Re: skips - technically whoever owns the skip (or has hired it) owns the rubbish. So if you want something from one you are supposed to ask permission otherwise it could be classified as theft, however unlikely.

    • Wow, well served with local supermarkets then…  Agree with ATM.. good c position to been mugged or cloned card - prob why not been considered before. Wasn’t there one outside post office and still  is2where people were abit nervous of using? Hope I am wrong but won’t see me rushing to use it…sure lots of folk will benefit thou. Not a great fan or user of Iceland but when it closed years ago people complained..  Guess they only b look at bigger sites - can’t recall an express one but a pity to those who frequent the store. Strange that Tesco can use it as local but Iceland can’t - guess it is  power of large supermarkets. Personally would have  loved an Aldi or Lidl but  clearly site to small. Only grocery stores left to come are Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl…
    • I'm paying £31 pcm for full fibre 300, whatever that is. I'm not sure it's a particularly good deal now, but I did a comparison at the time I went onto it, and it was then. I don't have a landline any more, and my mobile is with iD, who piggyback off 3. I don't usually have any problems,  except once a few years back when the whole 3  network (?) went  down for quite a long time.
    • I have Plusnet too.   I recently (August) had some problems with WiFi connection on different days but and the turning off and turning on didn’t work.  The WiFi didn’t work for quite a few hours - overnight in one case but eventually rectified itself.   Would be interested to know how much other people pay for Plusnet. I also have a landline with them as the mobile signal is bad inside house.  That is with EE and I want to change from them to another provider.
    • That's terrible 🤬 Was it the same company both times?
