RenF
Off on holiday next week, and hoping (possibly slightly wishfully) that I will get a few moments to read a book!No time to do my usual and browse in a book shop for inspiration, so I'd love any recommendations of recently read and enjoyed books from anyone who'd like to offer one...Thanks Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/33092-book-recommendations/ Share on other sites

Belle
Kate Atkinson's Life after Life - I loved it.Where'd you go Bernadette by Maria Semple is really good too. When I was on holiday I tried some of Nora Ephron's writing fo r the first time and loved it - essays work quite well for holiday, and don't be misled by 'essay' as they're all v easy reads! I read 'Things I hate about my neck', and then got her novel 'Heartburn' on my kindle and really liked it too (it's pretty obviously autobiographical). uptime
I've just got back from holiday and I read Capital by John Lanchester. It's not really 'getting away from it' as it is set on a street in south London but it was very funny. Have a lovely time. Bishberro
Life After Life. Best thing I've read in a long, long time. Gone Girl - starts well but fizzles out a bit in my opinion but an easy read. Tigers in Red Weather supposed to be good. The Book Thief - an oldie but a goodie. Ole
The last two books I read have been 'Gone Girl' by Glillian Flynn, and 'Alys, Always' By Harriet Lane. Out of these I preferred the Harriet Lane one, but both are the type of books you can't wait to find out what happens next. Belle
Agree Gone Girl is a good read but like the poster above I felt it fizzled out a bit and got ridiculous. I thought 'before i go to sleep' a much better thriller, if you are after one. Also the new Maggie O Farrell - think is instructions for a heatwave? - not her best but still v readable and great holiday book. crystal7
Gone Girl v gripping but I was disappointed at the ending. Another vote for the latest Kate Atkinson. Just read The Small Hand by Susan Hill which is creepy plus very easy to read. Enjoy your holiday!
