Hi I heard from a few colleagues that some schools have policies that prevent pupils walking to school or home on their own.

Do you know if Dulwich Hamlet Junior school or other schools in the ED area discourage children walking on their own?

Also how old would your child have to be/was your child before you let them walk to school on their own?

Don't know about the Hamlet but Heber requires you to sign a form to say that a child can leave on their own from Yr 5. I don't think there are any rules on what age they can go to school on their own as I would think that legally they are their parent's responsibility at that end of the day.

AFAIK Dulwich Hamlet does not have a min age policy. Worth checking on the website or call the school?

As to how old, depends on distance, maturity of child, any tricky crossings to negotiate etc Rule of thumb is end of Yr 5 - Yr 6. You should definitely make sure that your child has plenty of practice walking on their own before starting secondary school.

Children in year 3 & 4 re released into the care of a parent/carer. The teacher likes to physically eyeball you as you collect your child - or maybe that's just us ;)

Our eldest walked to & fro with friends from summer term year 5. Our others from the start of year 5. Our current year 4 boy is most put out that he has to wait until year 5 to be allowed to do it.

    • I’d also recommend Paul for electrical work. He came round the other week to help us out with a handful of jobs (installing an SPD, new light fittings, installing a dimmer switch, a bathroom fan). His quote was cheaper than what I got from others, he turned up on time and he got the job done quickly.
    • We’d like to add our recommendation for Lukasz and team at L&L Building & Maintenance.  Lukasz has recently installed a roof terrace for us, and we’ve found him a pleasure to work with from start to finish. We contacted about a dozen recommended builders and found his quote very competitive. During the build his team delivered quality work, they were no hassle in the house at all and they kept the place tidy every day. The terrace looks great, and we’re very happy customers. What stood out in particular was Lukasz’s responsiveness, right from discussing quotes to follow-up during the build. Lukasz often checked in and was always available when we needed him.  We’ll definitely contact Lukasz again for future building work and we’d happily recommend him to others looking for a reliable builder.   Lukasz Kugaczewski L&L Building & Maintenance 07926651960 [email protected] www.landl-build.com
    • Yes, I did mention the train, which I now get from East Dulwich to Guys instead of the 40. Depends where in East Dulwich you are starting from which route is easiest! I think it is probably lack of staff rather than lack of hospitals which is the problem?
    • What can be done? How about reporting it to the police?
