There have been clear patterns of increases in some types of crime in the area but the stats on that over a longer period of time ( both from a site that @Earl Aelfheah shared and also the numbers I gathered from the Police data site) were dismissed by the usual suspects. Clearly there can be no argument on the stats direct from the Met that are also mirroring those trends I previously noted and shared.

 

Rockets talking absolute nonsense. Since the filter was introduced, crime in Dulwich has fallen against background trends and in most categories, fallen in absolute terms.

Since before the filter was introduced:

  • 'All crimes' have fallen
  • Violent crime is down
  • Robbery has fallen

Crime against the person (mainly mobile phone theft) has increased everywhere (but has risen less quickly in Dulwich than in London generally).

Overall crime rate on Calton Avenue in London near SE21 7DE is 82% lower than crime rate in London and 24% lower than national overall crime level. Violent crime rate is 85% lower than London average and 57% lower than national average.

He's offered no evidence at all that increases in phone theft are linked to the filter (introduced more than 5 years ago); They're clearly not not, as one can tell from even a cursory street level analysis.

His claims around collisions / pedestrian safety and pollution are false. The data show the exact opposite to what he has stated, road safety has improved and pollution has fallen.

He's deliberately trying to mislead and to sow fear, in pursuit of his pathological, obsessive, grievance. 

I'm bored of having to correct this stuff, but it's potentially harmful, spreading a false sense of fear and the perception of Dulwich and the square specifically as a dangerous area to be avoided.

Will Southwark Council make the Dulwich Village junction safer?

As you know, Southwark’s council leader Sarah King promised to “trust residents who know what is best for their local areas”. In October she wrote to One Dulwich and local business and residents’ associations saying she supported us meeting council officers “in order to improve the operation of the Dulwich scheme”.

On 7 January, we met Southwark Highways to discuss small and inexpensive improvements to the Dulwich Village scheme, including:

·    better signage and clearer visual distinction between cycleway and pedestrian areas;

·    better traffic light phasing for cyclists;

·    access to Dulwich Village for Blue Badge holders and those depending on cars because of mobility and health issues;

·    re-opening Calton Avenue to emergency vehicles.

We also asked the council to show their support for local shops by making the timed restrictions apply during term-time only.

We have since written to the new Head of Highways, Dr Polyvios Polyviou, asking him to consider our proposals. We will let you know what happens.

Fines from Dulwich Village LTN cameras up 46% last year

As reported in Southwark News, council income generated by LTN fines in Dulwich Village went up 46% last year to £3.4 million. This brings the total sum generated from 2021 to 2025 to £18 million.

Just one camera, aimed at those entering Dulwich Village from the south, accounted for £8.4 million. We have repeatedly asked Highways to provide more warning, with better signage, on College Road and Gallery Road but so far they have refused to do so.

Dulwich Village used to be a welcoming place for visitors and a favourite shopping destination for people living south of the borough. According to the Dulwich Village Association, which represents the local shops, the fear of getting fined is the main reason why visitors are now going elsewhere.

Councillor responsible for LTNs leaves Labour for Green Party

Cllr James McCash, responsible for taking decisions about the Dulwich LTNs since taking over from Cllr Catherine Rose in 2022, announced on 17 February that he was leaving the Labour Party to join the Greens.

McAsh, who is currently a councillor for Goose Green ward, told Southwark News that Labour is “seemingly indifferent to the suffering their decisions cause”. This certainly applies to his decision to prevent Blue Badge holders from driving east to west through the Dulwich Village junction.
