My son has a very bad back at the moment. He's waiting to see a consultant but his appointment is not for another 6 weeks.

He's in terrible pain and can hardly walk and has to keep taking time off work when it flares up. He's seeing a good osteopath (and feels a bit better immediately after the session, then it's bad again) . He has also seen a physio but is in such pain he can't do the exercises at the moment. He's not sure what causes it but is very tall so the osteo thought that may have some bearing on his problems.

I just wondered if anyone can recommend any different type of specialist he could try? thanks for any advice and please send a PM  if so.

I had severe back issues a few years ago and found a steroid injection helped me back on my feet - basically eased the pain whilst I built the muscles back up to help prevent future problems. I found Has-Fit videos (search on YouTube - they're free) excellent - search for lower back exercises and you will find the majority focus on strengthening glutes and mobilising your hips where possible. Pilates and yoga are excellent. If swimming be careful with breaststroke as it can cause more issues.

My brother has issues with back, shoulders, neck and knees due to being very tall, so yes I definitely think you're right that can be a cause, along with lots of other things.

Hope his pain eases soon - for short term relief try Voltarol gel and also add in lots of anti-inflammatory foods (google and you'll get a list) especially ginger tea and turmeric is another good one.

Best wishes

I highly highly recommend Daniel at the dulwich chiropractor - he is excellent and has helped me over the years - last time early this year's when my back flared up (first ime in 5 years) git was so bad I couldn't sit, lie, sleep, walk - anything without excruciating pain.

Daniel's help sorted it out over a few weeks (some immediate improvements) and I'm not back to doing all the sports etc.

Give them a call!

I've suffered from back problems over the years and I'm tall too.

The physio/osteopath should be able to give the best advice on how to ease the pain (everyone's different)...But in the past I've found an ice pack helps stop any back spasms. Also have used a kind of corset for the lower back which limits sudden movements and helps you walk around again. As above pilates is a big help and I had a steroid injection when it was at its worst and that did work. The stretching exercises I was given by my physio bloody hurt to begin with but did make the difference in the end. And I loved a couple of acupuncture sessions.

As to the cause: I've found backpacks and using bags over my shoulders can make mine flare up. Using bags on bike racks or attached to my bike rather than on my back has made a difference. Sometimes if my back feels a bit sore or I get some sciatic pain in my legs then some stretches can put things back again.

Hope that helps 🙂

    • Hello, I'm from Ireland and would love my children to be able to know the language - I can speak it but I'm not so good at teaching it. If there's anyone local who used to teach Irish at primary school (preferably Connemara Irish) and who'd like to tutor 3 boys aged 7-10 for an hour or two a week please do let me know. Thanks, Sarah
