I've started going to Morrisons in Peckham and have been pleasantly surprised at their range of products. Shopping in Sainsburys  DKH is such as trial now, no staff, inconvenient malfunctioning machines and a general feeling that customers can go and take  running jump.

I only go there about every couple of months now (to put my flimsy plastic in the recyling bins). What a dismal, grubby experience it has become! I don't go to Sainsburys Forest Hill either because of their requirement to have me download a parking app on my phone. Luckily we have many supermarket choices nearby and I find Waitrose deliveries, Sainsburys Local on foot, Lidl and Aldi cover it all.

I find the Sainsbury's in Forest Hill even more depressing than the Dog Kennel Hill one, if such a thing was possible

Where is a nearby Aldi?? Do they deliver? I like Lidl for some things,  but lugging it home is a pain.

I also quite like Asda for some things. Also their delivery charges are low and their customer service is very good.

It's annoying that I find I can't get everything I need/want from one supermarket, but unfortunately I am picky. Some things I like I can only get from Waitrose, eg a particular brand of olive oil (presently rocketing in price).

I bought own brand soya milk from one place, possibly Asda, and found it had salt added to it. WTF?! They refunded me with no quibbles and collected it all next time they delivered.

And as for olive oil, my preference is the Spanish 2L cans in Sainsbury, it has a real nice peppery taste, not bland like the Italian one's I've tasted, but that's personal preference I suppose.

There is an Aldi on Elmers End Rd in Anerley. It's right next to a bus stop on the 197 bus, so if you live close to the 197 it might be convenient (without being exactly close).

I used to go to the Aldi in the Old Kent Road and then pop along to the Lidl further down the road. The Aldi was closed down pre Covid supposedly due to a new development being built which was supposed to include a new Aldi.  I have been to the Aldi in Anerley and it was fine.

Camberwell Green, but only if in that direction anyway, I wouldn't make a special trip unless it was Christmas (Lebkuchen! Big bags! Very cheap!)

I sometimes went to the Peckham Lidl in the days before ULEZ, but my car isn't compliant so it wouldn't be worth a trip unless I was using the car for something else, and it's a pain on the bus as there's no direct route.

For a direct bus route, there's  Aldi, Lidl and Tesco on adjacent stops on Rushey Green, Catford -- about 30 minutes on the 185 from ED Grove.  And ED to Catford by train can be done in a quarter hour if you pick the right times.

How do you get to Catford by train from ED?

I came across this yesterday in the FAQ on the Nectar help page, which might be helpful for anyone shopping there while the system's down.

on_arrow_thin_white.svgIf the service is down, will I still receive my discounted Your Nectar Price?

Answer
If Your Nectar Prices is unavailable, continue to shop as usual. We will identify where you have missed out on a discount and issue you a cash refund voucher via the Nectar app for use on a future purchase by the same shopping method as the original transaction. To redeem the voucher instore, simply swipe the voucher at the till when you checkout. To redeem the voucher online, find the voucher in your online coupon wallet and apply it at the checkout.

Went in around lunchtime, was told by a customer in the carpark it was cash only, HOWEVER that was not the case. Yes the initial queue was longer than normal and the store was busier than it has been for the last 6 weeks, but the queues worked their way through and it was actually OK.

    • Call National Grid and say you have a problem with a gas pipe  0800 111 999  and with luck they will fix it for free.  Most likely my diagnosis.   Some nutter had done their own gas plumbing in my house and National Grid blanked off both a supply to an old gas fire and a wrought iron pipe in the bathroom that supplied to the old bathroom water heater originally in the house. Extremely unlikely to be connected, may be from the days of gas lighting (mainly over by the 1920s) .  Gas connection will have long since been modernised.  If it hasn't been blanked off then just turn it on and sniff, or if you are like me light it.  This is how gas fitters did it in the past,  Although at your own risk (you are more likely to asphyxiate from natural gas, it is not poisonous, and the smell is an additive, so you can smell leaks. Chances are you are old enough to have used Bunsen burners at school. The end of the video is great, the biggest source of gas is your boiler, and if you house hasn't blown up already......
    • Thanks, that's very helpful to have that confirmed! Really wasn't sure what we were dealing with. Will look into a gas engineer...
    • Ah, dozy me.  Thanks for pointing that out.   I was so impressed by the MOT details being there I  didn't  expect anything else could be so didn't check any further.  I've not owned anything with an internal combustion engine for decades.  Recently found a light tool that I've a dim memory of using for (??) timing checks.
