Hello family roomers

I have been to the doctors (so I'm not asking for medical solutions) but I'm hoping someone has some useful tips!

I have one of those 'fast for 12 hours beforehand' bood tests. I understand the reasons for the fast (and that a good time to do it is overnight) but are there any tips for good things to eat just before the fast starts that will keep me going when I get up in the morning? (I'm currently on a high calorie diet so it's going to be a bit of a shock to the system!).

Thanks in advance.

Slow release carbs would be good. Oatcakes? With a bit of protein to slow them down even more, so cheese or hummous on them. You can make them pretty calorific if you try hard enough! Ice cream is also quite a good thing as the fat content makes the sugar release more slowly. Basically the sort of snacks that type II diabetics often have before bed, to keep their blood sugar levels more even through the night.
Honestly, try not to think about it! I have to do it quite a bit for blood tests and for operations too (which I have to often wait until 1.30-3.30pm to go in for - that is ultra hard). Try to just get up in the morning and get over for the blood tests as quickly as you can after you get up and take a snack for straight after if you need it. Your mind is always more focused on eating because you know you cant, in my experience anyway, but the majority of the fast is spent sleeping. Just imagine a late breakfast, maybe treat yourself to a nice breakfast on the way home/to your next destination?

    • A couple of updates to this terrible event:   1) In 2021, two cousins (one from Penge and one from Streatham) were convicted of murder and sentenced to a minimum of 23 years in prison. The Southwark News has a summary of the awful day. https://southwarknews.co.uk/area/dulwich/donnell-rhule-dulwich-knife-murderer-cousins-sentenced-to-life-for-killing-18-year-old/    2) Last week, a female prison officer from Forest Hill was sentenced to eight months in prison for pursuing a relationship with one of the two murderers while at HMP Brixton. https://metro.co.uk/2025/12/15/probation-officer-admits-relationship-prisoner-hmp-belmarsh-25501445/ https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/38203627/probation-officer-jailed-illicit-relationship-murderer-secure-prison/
    • The Commons Public Accounts Committee questioned both the CEO and MD of Capita yesterday, at their last meeting before the recess:  https://committees.parliament.uk/event/25889/formal-meeting-oral-evidence-session/.  In October they'd already expressed concern that Capita might not  be able to efficiently retake over responsibility for the administration within the timescale. Given the joint statement recently issued by Capita and the Cabinet Office I'm not sure that contacting an MP is going to add much, other than venting what I think most of us can probably appreciate of what those affected are likely  to be thinking and feeling; unless perhaps, and I hope it's not needed, to report on deficiencies in the immediate rescue actions.

    • Two for Ratcliffe, the obvious one:   And one simply because it has the word  "You are nothing but blind fascists" in it.  Oh and a good song too.   Haven't listened to this for years.  Bloody good!
