Yes it is, the collection "cost" is in the price of the bags.  They used to be free...

Southwark charges 20 garden waste bags for £30 and they would graciously collect them for ‘free’…. What a rip off! We’re now sharing the bin with our neighbours!

Yep - brown bag purchase includes price of collection (no further charges payable).

Given the blanket stickering of all greens bins with messages that food waste now needs to go into the small brown caddy bins I wonder how long it will be before the council starts issuing fines for anyone with food waste in the green bin!

I have just received a flyer from Southwark  regarding the brown bin service.

Under the heading when to subscribe it states. Dont wait till April save money and sign up NOW.

Do new subscribers get a cheaper rate? Like insurance quotes

As far as I know, no. At the best if you signed up now you might, once you've got the sticker, be able to get collections before the start of April 2024, assuming you weren't already subscribing, as the sticker shows only an end date, I believe. It's a tad misleading, if you ask me, as it is of no benefit to sign up early if you are already signed up for the current year.

Why is the council asking me to put out food and garden waste separately?

We are expecting the law will change in the near future, and it will become a legal requirement to collect and treat food waste and garden waste separately. We're starting to separate our services for these materials now, so they are ready for the change.

Just asked the council to take back my brown bin, wondering if there will be a noticeable decline in them on ED streets this year. Or will it take until the price goes into three figures before many more have a rethink?

I’m now sharing my garden bin with my neighbour and so yes, hopefully it means less ugly bins on the street

I think that food waste, like general waste, had to be collected for free but don't quote me on that post the election 🤔

No. After a while, they take the bin back.
