RichJ
My wife and kids were on the platform at the time - a woman jumped in front of a train. Pretty grim and very sad. llyamah
Are we certain that the lady is dead? I spoke to someone outside the station who said she is alive but it was 'looking grim'. It's extremely sad. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/34126-train-fatality-at-east-dulwich-station/#findComment-660717 Share on other sites

A-chan
My uncle witnessed the collision (he was with his son and shielded him from seeing the impact) and he called the ambulance and the police. She survived although she was severely injured (she was alive when he left her in the ambulance). He is very shaken up by what he saw. Laddy Muck
Gosh, this is tragic. My thoughts go to the lady in question, her family and friends, the train driver and those who witnessed such a shocking thing. andycam
Yeah TT, thanks for your comment. It was actually a general question as I hoped she hadn't just fallen in front of the train by accident. Either way, it's still a terrible tragedy if she was killed. But by the sounds of it she survived, which is a miracle. buddug
I think Toptree should be banned actually - looking at his previous history it's largely classic trolling along the lines of: 'you obviously have no friends'. A thoroughly nasty, bitter piece of work. llyamah
Does anyone have any news Re the lady's condition? From what I heard today, it's a bit premature to say she has survived. Penguin68
There are likely to be more 'injuries' than just to the very sad woman who chose (if she did) to jump - the driver and witnesses may also be victims - some train drivers never work again, as drivers, following this sort of incident. Those who are driven to kill themselves (if this was a suicide jump it certainly wasn't a 'cry for help') often have over-whelming reasons to do so - a 'recovery' with undoubtedly serious injuries and, presumably, the cause of the attempt still there, will hardly be easy, swift or indeed perhaps possible.Overall, an immensely sad occurrence, with very little chance of any positive endings. If RichJ's report of a jump is accurate (which I have no reason to doubt) then there is very little chance this was a tragic accident, which makes it worse for surviving family or friends, I would guess. Sue
I guess if you jump in front of a train you are probably not in the frame of mind to think about the possible/probable effect on other people.Terrible terrible thing all round. A-chan
I wrote based on what my Uncle saw - he left her alive in the ambulance. I didn't ask if he got her name or anything. He was with his son so he wanted to shield him from it as much as he could otherwise I'm sure he would have gone with her to the hospital, as would I had I been there. Her injuries were severe, I don't think it's necessary to elaborate, however it is possible she could recover physically though she would be disabled. Many don't die instantly but as a result of their injuries. I hope the latter won't be her fate. Even in my darkest time, for want of a better phrase, I don't think I could have comtemplated such a way to go... LalKJ
I am the wife referred to above, who was on the platform with my two children when this happened and very sadly, she did jump moments before the train passed and lay curled up on the tracks. It was desperately sad and from what I saw deeply affected all of the witnesses on the platforms, and no doubt devastated the train driver. Thank you A-Chan for your account from your uncle. I am so sorry to hear she was severely injured. When I managed to get my kids off the platform she was obviously in pain but seemed to have free movement, so I had hoped she was miraculously safe. I hope your Uncle and cousin are not too traumatised by it. I think I managed to shield my children and I think they don't know what happened although were shook up by the pandemonium that then ensued. It's only now they have gone to bed that I realise I am still a bit shaken up by it. When I returned to ED this afternoon, I asked at the station ticket desk, but they didn't have any update as to her condition.I didn't really want to add a long message here, the reason I added to this thread, was mainly I wanted to comment on how well nearly everyone reacted to what happened (bar a lady complaining her would now be late for work). After the initial second of shock a number of people were immediately calling for the emergency services, whilst a number of other people were trying to keep the lady talking and comforted, and A-Chan's uncle obviously stayed with her despite having his own child with him. When I came off the station, a number of people stopped me to check I was ok and ask if I needed any help to get anywhere. And, as always, the emergency services, seemed to be top notch, sending a fleet of vehicles and the helicopter in what seemed like just a few minutes. Yuuna
I often think we have a tendency to make the individual out to somehow be selfish or inconsiderate for not thinking of the effect their actions may have on others. Yes, other people would be effected. That's secondary to the person at the heart of this. I'm not a psychologist so I'm not going to give an assessment on her probable frame of mind. I can only go on my personal experiences. I do believe a suicide attempt is a drastic action and for some it is a 'cry for help' and may be the final one. Whatever the outcome, I hope she finds happiness.
