Years ago there was something similar locally,  but out of a bright blue sky,  so completely unexpected. A bolt from the blue.

I heard this massive bang, the loudest thing I'd ever heard (until today!)

I went out to investigate and found lightning had struck a house in Whateley Road (I think it was Whateley Road.  Other people may remember, as quite a  few other people were also gathered around).

The lightning had gone down the chimney. The fire service were there for some time.

It was quite exciting, though I don't suppose the people in the house it struck thought so!

As I said it hit Alleyn's' building, near the wellness centre. Turns out their IT systems and leccy gates aren't working atm. Perhaps they will now buy a (very expensive) lightning conductor.

In the recent past I have actually stood at a warehouse door watching the heavy rain pouring down when the lightning struck the fire escape above me. THAT was close but not as loud as yestarday. You kmow you are near when you hear the electricity hit, then the thunder a few milliseconds later. In fact, now I remember we were on holiday out in the open when we noticed our hair was standing up. We took shelter just as the lightnng started. Electrifying - but thankfully not in a bad way.

I was standing in my hall and it looked like there was a huge ball of light right outside in the road. It lit up the hall 😮

Then the immediate bang 😮

Apparently it’s an incredibly rare phenomenon. Almost never seen by  People!

Crikey. Well as I was inside the house,  I only saw it through the glass in my front door, so probably it wasn't strictly "ball lightning" as such. It certainly wasn't moving about!

And if it struck Alleyn's, it can't have been in two places at once.

But as I said, it "looked like" there was a huge ball of light outside in the road.

I was very glad I wasn't standing outside, put it like that 😂

My partner heard the bang in Surrey Quays!

    • We did fine for 300 years with the Royal Mail before the current "competitive" shambles was introduced. Now we have multiple companies with multiple vehicles making deliveries to the same streets every day, none of the workers are employees with decent working conditions or any job security, and consumers have to deal with x different distribution networks and apps and platforms and drop-off points... https://postandparcel.info/12422/news/uk-royal-mails-monopoly-to-end-on-1-january-2006/
    • That's certainly the narrative that runs ad infinitum on the Forum but I wonder how true it is. Speaking for myself I'm very happy M&S, Superdrug, Pret and, in the last century, Sainsbury's arrived and judging from the business they do I'm not alone.
    • There are Christmas lights?! Or a, I missing something?
    • Though it's often the big corporates who dig deepest. For small independents that's a bigger ask, decorating, when they do their own premises is cost enough. And we're normally happy not to have the big corporates in LL.
