Does anyone know why the palm tree on the East Dulwich roundabout - end of Lordship Lane & East Dulwich Road - is covered in what appears to be shiny wrapping paper?

I wasn't sure if this had been done to protect the plant - seems unlikely - or as a joke - possibly.

I'm worried it might damage the plant.

I was going to check with Southwark to see if they know anything about it but thought someone on here might.

Thanks

I agree it looks good, but like Kristen I'm concerned about the possible effect on the palm.

As I think it's just the trunk that is covered the only possible damage is constriction - that the paper cuts into the tree. In all honesty that isn't likely - the tree is more likely to burst the paper, in the several years needed for the trunk to widen sufficiently. Trees 'breathe' (transpire) through their leaves and take in moisture through their root systems, neither of these are compromised by the wrapping. If left alone the paper will wear away long before it could possibly damage the tree.

I don't think it's paper around it - it looks like plastic or a type of foil wrapping paper. I'm not sure it's going to wear away.

I think the trunk of the tree is formed when the leaves of the plant drop off - so it's not bark as such.

I'm worried if the material is plastic or foil it could cause the plant heat stress - or rain/moisture could get trapped behind it and cause it rot.

Let me try to reassure you those of you who concerned about the tree: the person who coordinated the decorating of the tree worked in arboriculture and chose the materials involved specifically because they would not damage the tree at all.

And as planned, the tree has already been returned to its usual state.

    • https://www.letslinkuk.net/ I'm interested to know why the OP didn't find this sort of scheme to work, as I would have thought it was much harder to find someone to do a direct exchange with? Does anybody else have experience of a scheme like this? Happy to be persuaded!
    • I personally think is a great idea Bobbly and would love if there was a section for it. I wouldn't offer free gardening under the "for sale" section as I would expect something in exchange and wouldn't expect our cat being looked after for free under the "wanted" section, as an example.

    • I have fond memories of Govinda's I used to go there  back in the 90's (maybe earlier) for an affordable tasty lunch..I was wondering if its still around. Now I have to make a point of going there. Does anyone else remember a really affordable basement cafe run by the church in a street off of Golden Square? parallel to Regent Street? I also used to love the Vegetarian cafe on Neal Street in the basement (Neal Street Cafe?) and there was an inczredible inexpensive authentic Japanese resturant I use to go to with my Japanese friends (who introduced me to it) tucked away behind Long Acre where that brown brick modern building ('modern' I think it went up in the 90's!) now stands that fronts Long Acre and Neal Street..I think it was called Asakasa or something?
