wanted- recomendation for data recovery person

I dropped my netbook and now it won't boot up. It was switched on at the time which is apparently worse. All I want to do is extract my files from it, but you probably only get one shot at it so I really want to find someone skilled, careful and experienced to do it! I did a search on the forum and messaged someone called Jaybee, or similar, but got no response so I wondered if anyone else had had this done successfully? I did ask in a couple of service centres in an indoor market and they said I had to leave my netbook with them for a couple of days, which I really don't want to do. Anyone who's dropped their laptop- did you have to leave it with the repair person, or was it a fairly quick operation so you could hang about until it was done? My files are important to me only, but still, I don't want anyone else looking at them!!
Thank you very much, r-c. I don't know what an optical drive is so will go & google it now. it does fire up, & says the files are loading, which fills me with false hope, because it then gives me a message that has absolutely no meaning to me whatsoever. My netbook doesn't have a cd drive tho, will i still be able to try the linus thing? Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply.

Ok, back already, no optical drive so that is more bad news for me, i

guess. But hopefully this will have helped somebody else who does (& has also thrown their laptop

on the floor :-(

R-c, if you have any more ideas feel free to throw them my way!

It's about time I updated this... A few guys pm'd me about this problem and I did my best to judge their characters from their pm's and decided to choose Kozan, who appeared to be a decent type of guy. He said he would be able to retrieve my data at my house, which was exactly what I wanted- except I wasn't living at my house anymore so he agreed to meet me at a caf? in South London of my choice and he tried to fix it there. He spent about 3 hours doing that while I looked anxiously on. He couldn't fix it the easy way, though, and he told me he would have to take it apart after all and he didn't think a cafe was the best place for that so he would have to take it away with him i.e. I would have to Trust him with it. That was really hard for me, I wouldn't trust the angel Gabrielle with my data but, having sat next to him for 3 hours he did seem like a nice person so I let him leave with my laptop. If we had been in my home he would have been happy to do it all there, and he did offer to do it in my new place but it was out of his work area so it would have cost me more. Anyway, he kept me updated with progress by texts and 2 hours later he had put all my data on a USB and another copy on a CD disc-an extra copy 'just in case' which was nice of him. It has taken me months to check what's there because the new thing I bought to replace the laptop doesn't have a USB port or a disc drive (!) but now I have and all but about 4 or 5 files out of a few hundred are there, so I think he did a really good job. The missing files are still ?kind of? there, in what he calls a ?ghost? form and he is going to have another go at recovering those for me.

So, I recommend him, and his prices are reasonable. But please don't suffer like me- back-up, back-up, back-up!!!

    • @Dulwichway Absolutely - I'm in no way trying to say that what happened was life-changing. I've encountered way worse situations and think of myself as pretty tough, which is why I took them on and got pelted. I suppose I'm just taken aback because the park always seemed so safe. But the stats I've just posted contradict that.   I suppose the one of the points of this thread is to point out that they weren't just numpty youths - I'd bet money on some of them being involved in more serious criminality. And to tell others to be vigilant.
    • Still, I guess it could be a lot worse than water being thrown at you by these numpty youths during these warmer times? thankfully it wasn't the more dangerous mugging type youths that crossed your path waving knifes and guns in your face!  just a thought? hopefully these muppets will get sorted by plod soon, but don't hold your breath.
    • Another dramatic spike the previous May 24 -  both crimes around the car park -  could this be related to the massively increased numbers of people around Gala time?
    • No, no need to shut down tfl, just cut out the unnecessary and expensive beauracracy, simples.  Sep, you don't even live here.
