We live in East Dulwich and often to go Rye Lane. I know people say there are good restaurants near Rye Lane.

Does anyone have recommendations for good places for lunch or dinner?

We like Manze for pie & mash at lunch. And I've been to Peckham Bazaar in the past, which was excellent.

Thanks!

Lots of very good places around Rye Lane. I'd say there are the long-standing great places like Levan, Mr Bao, Oi Spaghetti, Peckham Bazaar and (towards Bellenden Rd) Begging Bowl, Made of Dough, and Artusi.  And then the newer places that we've been enjoying include Janda Diner, Taquiza, Hausu, En Root, Messy Mary (currently at Copeland Social). We are spoilt for choice really! Depends what you're looking for - some of the above are cheap and cheerful, others much more fancy

Ok, I'll bite. It depends on what you are after (and budget) but our favourite is Forza Wine. We went when it was cold and dark, but it's a rooftop location so should be even better if it's sunny and bright. Link to review below. There's also a recent review on the site of 139 Fika which was pretty good. I'd say it was in Bellenden but they say it's in Peckham (maybe because it makes it sound cooler!). https://open.substack.com/pub/eatsdulwich/p/restaurant-review-forza-wine?r=8oe6m&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false

Yes it is, coloquially and locally, although it's a very recent coinage (for marketing purposes) and is non specific as to what it actually means. Peckham is a real place on a map with clear boundaries. I was commenting on a comment which had suggested using Bellenden as a locator rather than the utilised 'Peckham'. The venue in question is in Rye Lane, not Bellenden Road, so saying Bellenden would be unhelpful. The OP appears to have recognised that, in a graceful way.

Slight crossed wires I think, but either way you are right. The venue in question I referred to as being in Bellenden is 139 Fika which is in Bellenden Road, not Forza Wine, which is in Rye Lane. I talked about Bellenden estate agent baloney here and was completely in agreement with you. https://open.substack.com/pub/eatsdulwich/p/restaurant-review-139-fika?r=8oe6m&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true

Guacamoles in Rye Lane market for pretty authentic Tacos

Ganapati on Holly Grove has some of the best south Indian  food in London - light, aromatic fresh, home style cooking - lovely location and people too.

Forzawine is fun for a rooftop terrace, great view, cocktails and good small plates

Tried Janda. Hits and some misses. Chicken Satay & Beef Rendang were excellent and spot on. Stir fried rice noodles (Kuay Teow) were unexpectedly swimming in a peanut sauce and sadly very overcooked.
They were absolutely swamped though (assume because of the excellent recent review) so wonder if quality was affected by that… would definitely go again and try more things, menu was full of interesting sounding dishes.

Slightly smug review but really want to try this now - best Malaysian in London is Roti King near Euston - be good to have somewhere just as good more local!

En Root, 'plant powered Indian fusion' - description is more pretentious than this small chain, is wonderful.  Cheap and relatively cheerful.  Not sure if it has been reviewed by the Times @Eats Dulwich have you visited?

Urbanspoon used to be a great place for reviews of cafes ('greasy spoons') but apparently not so good since it was taken over by Zomato

Best Spoons in the area is Parkside Cafe on Forest Hill Road, from Uber Eats:

Parkside Cafe, positioned in the charming area of East Dulwich in London, specialises in hearty breakfast and brunch offerings. It holds an impressive customer rating of 5.0, reflecting its popularity, particularly in the mornings. The cafe features a menu replete with traditional breakfast fares such as rolls (including varieties like Bacon and Egg Roll, Sausage Roll), burgers (such as the Chicken Fillet Burger and Cheese Burger), and a selection of sandwiches and baguettes. Popular items among patrons include Beans, Chips, Two Crusty Slices, and a Latte, with the Bacon and Egg Sandwich and Chicken Fillet Burger frequently ordered together.

Surely AI is now starting to take over on restaurant reviews!

Some good shouts above! Agree with zork on Guacamoles (authentic - no frills) and Ganapati, and agree with malumbu on En Root - really love that place.  @Eats Dulwich - I like Roti King too, although my Malaysian friend says this is only one type of Malaysian cooking, and there are plenty of other good restaurants around London  - Normah's (Queensway) is another classic - Mambow (which moved from Peckham to Clapton unfortunately) was amazing too - but I think I might prefer Janda to all the above - maybe best to wait a few weeks before visiting Janda, to let the post-Times-review crowd settle down! As some have said above, the tables are very cramped at Janda - we don't mind this, but others might

Thanks, i don't know those other restaurants but they sound good. There was a very good Malaysian restaurant on Edgware Road but I forget the name (not Melur, further north than that). tbh though I have to choose carefully with Malaysian, I do find some dishes very hot.

Don't know en root but if it's plant-based it's right up my street. Thanks.

Thanks everyone for the great recommendations!

I wouldn't normally go for vegan restaurants, but I've been to En Root and really liked it. Fresh and tasty.  The Ritzy Cinema in Brixton also sell their food, to eat in their cafe before or after a film (I don't think they sell the whole menu that you'd find in Peckham, but there is a good choice)

Yes, En Root are excellent.

Shame, go there!  Although embarrassingly we only used it takeaway during lockdown.  It's a Persian store/cafe/restaurant if you are unaware of the cultural reference in the name.

Just checked the menu and it is phenomenal and good value too, thanks for reminding me to go there
