Wow, well served with local supermarkets then…

Agree with ATM.. good c position to been mugged or cloned card - prob why not been considered before.

Wasn’t there one outside post office and still  is2where people were abit nervous of using?

Hope I am wrong but won’t see me rushing to use it…sure lots of folk will benefit thou.

Not a great fan or user of Iceland but when it closed years ago people complained..

Guess they only b look at bigger sites - can’t recall an express one but a pity to those who frequent the store. Strange that Tesco can use it as local but Iceland can’t - guess it is  power of large supermarkets.

Personally would have  loved an Aldi or Lidl but  clearly site to small.

Only grocery stores left to come are Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl…

Planning permission for the new Tesco Express on the old Poundland site, on Lordship Lane has now been granted. It was granted on the 14th October.
Tesco’s will have an ATM, which we need in East Dulwich.

Do you have a link to this, Monica?

I just googled and I can't find anything on the Southwark  planning register, but I'm probably looking in the wrong place.

I don't think a single all-inclusive URL is easily doable.  When you enter a search the system presents the result without any of one's search parameters added to the URL.  So I suggest you go to https://planning.southwark.gov.uk/online-applications/search.do?action=advanced

where you just need to enter the address -- use SE22 8EW -- and the

Date Received start date.  I used 1/1/2025.

The three Tesco applications, all minor things, were all made in May.  The Simple search that I'd done previously had no time limit, and didn't include anything else that might have been from Tesco in the last two years.

Incidentally, when I searched on the address

29-35 Lordship Lane

it did not pick up the Tesco applications, which were held as

29 - 35 Lordship Lane

Grrr!

So no mention of either Tesco  or October?

So we are no further forward with knowing when the Tesco will actually open?

The place seems to have been empty for ages. I would have thought Tesco might have wanted to be up and running in time for Christmas, but maybe that isn't relevant to a relatively small Tesco Express?

ETA: The wonders of the space bar, eh? It took me more  time than it should have done to see the difference between the two addresses in your previous post!

I did check that Tesco were the applicants on at least one of the 7 May forms.  I would be interested to know what Monica has seen.  Possibly some other formal annnouncement somewhere, or the LL traders' grapevine (which I'd guess is generally reliable)?  I wondered if it might have been a licensing matter, but don't see any mention in the licensing sub-committee's 16 October meeting agenda.

In the meantime, I'm not even assuming that Tesco are taking the lease.

The suspense is killing me.

And I don't even like Tesco 🤣 and I can't remember the last time I used an ATM 🤣

I have just read on open council network that Tesco had applied for an alcohol licence, and an ATM license, according to the article. Not sure if permission was granted, due to local opposition, citing another supermarket might encourage shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.

The minutes of the licensing sub-committee meeting of 24 July are at https://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/documents/g8329/Printed minutes Thursday 24-Jul-2025 10.00 Licensing Sub-Committee.pdf?T=1.  The  application was granted.

Incidentally, the attached covering letter of 7 May does name Tesco as the applicant in all three of the planning applications I listed above in my 30 October post.

Crawthew Grove was always full of rubbish when Poundland was there and it's been refreshingly free of it since they've moved in. I hope it stays like this, but have a feeling it's going to get worse again with Tesco.

What sort of rubbish?

The bins were always overflowing, broken bottles, etc...

Sorry to be dim.

Was that coming from the shop itself, or from customers?

I'd have thought the shop would have some sort of large business bin, in which case presumably Tesco will as well?

    • Oh yes, it could have been about there, I can't remember exactly. At one point there seemed to be a load of pizza places opening on NCR. I vaguely remember the one we used to use was put out of business by another one which opened. Wasn't Grace and Favour's food offering more of a tea shop at the back of the actual shop? If memory serves the owner, whose name escapes me now, was one of the earliest people I know to move to Hastings. Which must now be crammed with South East Londoners 🤣

    • Hi Dogkennelhillbilly, You won't be aware that i proposed infill sites for housing in East Dulwich - the garages on Bassano Street and Henslowe that respectively became 1-4 Dill Terrace family houses and the 78, 80, 80A Henslowe Street family houses. These were council owned garages and it was frustrating how slow the council was to go from my idea to completion (roughly eight years). East Dulwich has some other vacant WW2 bomb sites I'm guessing that the private land owners have been sitting on.Owe for a land tax for vacant land.  WRT to the builders yard by East dulwich station. Southwark Council has an agreed policy the area should remain suburban 2/3 storeys maximum. But the approved scheme is 9 storeys of student accommodation. Very hard to put this genie back in the bottle. The council has recently publicly stated lower ratios of social housing will be required. I will be amazed if the developer doesn't submit another application now they have the 9 storeys approved but with significantly less social housing. The less social housing the higher the land values. The higher the land values the less social housing viability reports state are possible.  If we really want to increase home supply - Southwark have over 6,000 empty homes. Vancouver charges a low % of the value of empty homes and rapidly eased this problem. Parts of Wales have introduced under Article 4 planning permission is required for second homes seeing within 12 months a dramatic decrease in property prices. Southwark Council have Article 4 requirements - why not add this one? It takes National political will to solve this AND regional and local authorities such as the second home council tax premium and these being used promptly.
