Shoplifting is such epidemic now that it justifies the introduction of facial recognition facilities at the entrance to retail premises. With immediate access to  a database of all known shoplifters, such a facility could sound an immediate alert to management - provided of course that removal of face masks was a condition of entry.

Would you have jumped down the OP's throat if they'd described the perp as white, 50s, male?

How we morphed from a hurried post about a shop-lifter, to rampant racism, migrants and single mothers, I do not know.

And I thought the thread about hot dogs was hysterical....

A  description limited to just " white, 50s, male" would be equally useless in identifying anybody, because it could apply to so many people. What point are you trying to make?

And I didn't "jump down the OP's throat."

The way the thread has developed is how threads work. Different people have different views on things.

And the point about media references to migrants and single mothers was relevant to the discussion.

the offender can carry on regardless until trespassed. Trespassing the perp is the only meaningful method the control the crime and it is incumbent on us all the assist the shop owner and the police to identify the person.

Too many American YouTube videos. The problem isn't the lack of an offence, it's the lack of police resources to respond to it.

    • DKH was two form entry, it is now one form entry to cope with the fact it was far more under subscribed than other schools in the area. They had actually combined year groups into single classes, 3/4 and 5/6.  When a school changes name, it’s usually because of a bad reputation perhaps the results.  The new name is dry with no history unlike its current name. It’s a very sketchy decision. It’s an expensive vanity project for someone.  What  will happen if the name change does not increase applications to the school?
    • @first mate I assume Alice made a mistake, as she removed her reaction.  I was wondering about park wardens. As I said, there was one there last night, who was incredibly helpful and proactive. As well as bringing me to the police, he caught up with a young guy on a bike who'd earlier been the victim of an attempted theft by these kids and linked him up with the police too. But I do wonder, as I've only very occasionally seen him riding around, how many they have and what hours they patrol. I've no doubt they'd be a strong deterrent if they had a better presence. They were nowhere to be seen the first time around.  Update: I've just found this: https://services.southwark.gov.uk/community-safety/community-wardens The guy in the photo at the bottom of the page was the lovely warden of last night and I've just now remembered him telling me he's based in Burgess Park. Anyway, there needs to be more of them, as I rarely see one in Peckham.
