tds_
Callout for help from any local experts here. Looking to find out more about the history of the property on the corner of Whateley Road and Ulverscroft road (with the green glazed bricks). Now a residential property, i'm told it was a bottle shop in days gone (the house was built around 1900) by and i'd like to learn more about the history of the business that was once here - name, photos, anything at all really! Seems to be very little from open source research so i'm hoping anyone with history in the area can provide any insight! Starting here before i contact Southwark Archives or similar orgs to get any information and pictures (any advice here also would be welcome). Thank you Edited July 28 by tds_ 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/364976-old-bottle-shop-on-whateley-road/ Share on other sites

Jenijenjen
You've sent me down a rabbit hole here! According to the 1909/10 street directory, 10 Whateley Road was the address for John Gibson, beer retailer. He was born about 1860 in Walworth and his father, also called John, was a beer retailer as well. By the time of the 1891 census, John Gibson Junior had moved to 10 Whateley Road and described himself as a beer house manager. He was married to Margaret and had a son and a daughter. John and Margaret were still living at the address 30 years later when he described himself as a beer retailer. His mother's name was Charlotte Sarah and there is an entry from the same street directory as above for someone by that name described as a beer and wine retailer at 42 North Cross Road. This was most likely his mother, now described as a widow. Hoping this is of interest. 5 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/364976-old-bottle-shop-on-whateley-road/#findComment-1715223 Share on other sites
ianr
If the local archive doesn't suffice there's also the London Archives. I remember using what was then called the London Metropolian archive some years ago, and viewing Street Directories among other things there. https://www.thelondonarchives.org/your-research/research-guides 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/364976-old-bottle-shop-on-whateley-road/#findComment-1715224 Share on other sites

That was on the corner of Whateley and Landcroft - opposite what is now Harris primary school/the police station as was. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/364976-old-bottle-shop-on-whateley-road/#findComment-1715267 Share on other sites

I’ve got a few different streets to look up. The street directory is on Ancestry and you'll need a subscription to access. It's reasonably easy to navigate though you have to find the page you're looking for by a combination of trial and error/guesswork. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/61265/images/47056_263021009499_1592-00159?usePUB=true&_phsrc=Soz1793 There is though also a general search page for London directories where the street name can be entered in the keyword field and results will take you to the specific pages. https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/61265/ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/364976-old-bottle-shop-on-whateley-road/#findComment-1715281 Share on other sites

I’ve subscribed to Ancestry a few times in the past but felt I wasn’t using it enough to warrant keeping up the subscription. OutOfFocus
I understand you access ancestry from any Southwark library computer. Or see the real post office directories in archive. 1 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/364976-old-bottle-shop-on-whateley-road/#findComment-1715379 Share on other sites
BrandNewGuy
This thread brings back hazy memories from the early to mid-90s of a wine shop / off licence off Lordship Lane run by a bibulous chap who specialised in East European wines. It wasn't on a parade of shops but was on maybe Whateley Rd – or possibly Goodrich?? I used to walk past it when heading home from work and would drop in for a cheap bottle of Hungarian plonk. Someone tell me I'm not dreaming this... 🙂 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/364976-old-bottle-shop-on-whateley-road/#findComment-1715461 Share on other sites
