Have they cut them down completely, i.e. including the main trunk, or just cut off some branches?

How tall were they before? When were they planted? What kind of trees are they?

Are you sure this was 'official' and not vandalism? As described, unless you saw council or council instructed workpeople doing this it sounds simply destructive. Some relatively newly planted street trees around us were attacked a few years ago by selfish idiots.

Saw that too and was disappointed b/c it WAS a serene, green oasis - that footpath between Greendale and Dulwich Hamlet football stadium.

I suspect it might be for safety of walkers after dark so it prevents people hiding there? I don't know.  It was vandals b/c someone cleaned it up 😂

It's depressing that so much urban landscaping (i.e. getting rid of anything green) revolves around averting crime rather than with officers on foot to prevent crime and proper follow up. Benches taken out to stop loitering etc.  Teens and early 20s kids who still live at home need somewhere cheap to get out to and socialise and just chill and drink tinnies and smoke - esp on warm evenings when it's beautiful outside.

In addition - it's depressing that no one cleans up the parking lot where the car wash is - just a disaster area now, I see my kids scanning around when we walk through wondering what the heck is going on there.  Does anyone know who owns that land?

Now isn’t that land going to be built on for student housing or have I got it wrong?  Maybe it’s prep? PS plenty of benches in Dulwich Village and Melbourne Grove if you’re searching for somewhere to sit.

People chatting, smoking, drinking tinnies- this is exactly what pedestrian spaces like Dulwich Square and Melbourne Grove North have been developed for, for people to get together, sit around and socialise.

I think the Southwark tree cutters have been around

I noticed the second weeping willow on the west side of Peckham Rye has been chopped down - the first was chopped a few years ago.

I guess it was dangerous to people who sat in the bit that got enclosed when the branches dropped to the ground.

I'm sure they don't chop down trees just to get to use the chainsaws 🤣

I doubt the people making the decision to chop are the same people wielding the saws, but I might be wrong.

Trees are normally only cut down if they are diseased or potentially dangerous, or both.

Or if they are in the way of something, of course 😭

Went past Dog Kennel Hill school (now had a name change for this September) this morning and the hedges and bushes that were previously on the main road and all around were being totally annihilated ! 3/4 or more people with chainsaws etc. Felt so sad for the wildlife within.

Why is much of this site turn into council bashing. If you have time to post, you have time to do a little research.  

This took 5 seconds: Local authorities in England have a statutory Duty to Consult on the felling of street trees, requiring public consultation on proposed management unless specific exemptions apply, such as dead or dangerous trees. They also have a duty to consider tree protection during the planning process and can issue Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) to protect significant trees. Additionally, they must ensure the safety of the public by properly managing trees to prevent danger to people or property, exercising powers to inspect trees and, in emergency situations, to take action to make them safe

There will be a team responsible for this.  If you think you know better I posted a link to a job there.  I've not studied arboriculture or have a relevant qualification, just have an interest in the natural and managed environment.  I've planted hedging and trees in the garden.

If you are concerned your first port of call is one of your local councilors.

what a shame about the shrubs being removed from Dog Kennel Hill School = that was planted by the children several years ago - in recognition of a lovely head teacher who retired. 

What a shame the had not got the good grace to retain that.
