  • MrsR changed the title to Peckham Rye Park Attack - August 22

I quote from the News Shopper

A post on social media network Nextdoor by someone who says they know the victim expands on their reported injuries.

This is not exactly first hand. The mET say

A 48-year-old man alleges he was injured

😮

Interesting wording by the Met. Do you have a link to that?

Are they just being very careful what they say, or are there any grounds to suspect the man wasn't telling the truth?

No, it was a man physically attacked in the woods in Peckham Rye park around 9pm one evening in the summer.

Do you have a link to that other than what's already been posted?

Mine came from linked story in the the News Shopper, an advertising dependent free sheet, quoting (social media) Next Door, an un-named person who supposedly knew the attacked person and the met who say they were called, don't mention any injuries and say "alleged".

The news was circulated on our local social media group - I don't know what is on standard media

This is horrible to hear about. We used to get daily Police patrols on foot & even regular patrols on horseback in the area. I know our local station had some bad eggs, but the officers I came across in the area back then were all a fantastic bunch. Sadly nowadays the Met's presence is non-existent, bar the weekly walk from the SNT.

I hope something gets done, arrests made and the victim some genuine support and counselling.

Sorry to be dim, but where has that link come from and why is it relevant to this thread?

I'm not doubting you, just wondering if I've missed something above!

the only known name is from that poster in the window where it says to email [email protected]. I thought that website might shed some light on who is creating the posters

I hope whoever was attacked is doing ok, but agree there is something very off/vigilante-ish about all of this

In response to Angelina & Sue's queries, it's being reported with an appeal for witnesses in the Southwark News this week, but just as cautiously & with no new information.

Why is it left to a friend of the victim to seek information?

There's something odd about the whole thing.

Why has it not been in the local press? Or has it?

Sounds a horrible, random attack, quite possibly for social media clicks, or some kind of sick initiation into goodness knows what - it is reported they were filming the incident. I do not really doubt that any of this is true. Perhaps the friend who reported it elsewhere does not want to be identifiable?

There has been an emerging issue with different types of anti-social teenage/ young adult behaviour on the Rye this summer and this latest incident indicates a tipping point into something much nastier. The park should be a safe and enjoyable space for all.

Yes, still odd.

Their information seems mostly to have come from the social media post referred to above.

And, as you say , reported "cautiously".

    • Our camera caught two folks doing this. One of them led me to believe the delivery driver was in on it as he left the package in a very odd place that the thief (who arrived about 10 minutes after from a direction where he could not have seen where the driver left it) went straight to it and took it - but he then dumped it halfway down the next road as clearly packets of freeze-dried food for a DofE award wasn't to his liking (karma sucks!). The second time a guy pulled his bike up in broad daylight, walked down to our door, opened the box, threw the empty box down and stuffed what he had found in his backpack and brazenly waved at the camera and then cycled off. Police asked us to upload his picture but we never heard anything back.

    • In the 1960s my husband went to a private day school, Although he was a bright child having won a couple of scholarships to other private schools, his father chose this particular one. He went from 11 - 14 years and left as unhappy with the set up which was based on ethnicity. All boys with both parents English were placed in the A stream regardless of academic ability, Boys with an Irish background were placed in B stream. All others were C streamed - this included boys with a Black or Asian  background, mixed race or mixed European background. His schooldays came to an end when he wished to learn Latin and he was told that no boy in C stream could participate in this subject. His father (not English) was very upset at this and withdrew him from the school and sent him  to a country boarding school.  The experiences he had with his schooling culminated in a breakdown of his mental health and several months in Maudsley. He had low self esteem and it took several decades for him to understand that it was the school system and not his ability which had failed him
